Sea Otter 2010 – Shimano

Shimano had on display their new 10 speed mountain bike group, on the Deore XT and SLX versions. The system is called Dyna-Sys, and is comprised of a 3×10 drivetrain. The groups include a new crank, chain, cassette, rear shifter and derailleurs.


The front triple chainring uses 42-32-24 teeth, while the rear cassette is currently either a 11-34 or 11-36. The idea for this combination, is that the closer spacing in the front, combined with the width in the rear, will gravitate the user to the more functional middle and large chainrings. Larger chainrings create lower tension and greater pedaling efficiency. The gearing has been optimized to be more suspension friendly, especially since the closer front spacing reduces the chain angle.

Another unique addition to the system is a mountain bike specific chain, which is asymmetrical. The outside is optimized for front shifting, while the inside is for rear shifting (logo goes out). The new chain design gives crisper and more precise shifting.

All the new tweaks should create a more stable platform, with better power transfer, fewer recovery shifts, intuitive shift patterns, smoother shifting, and more efficient and powerful pedaling.
