Sea Otter – MET Helmets

by Brian Mullin on April 21, 2011

MET helmets are quite popular in many parts of the world, but they haven’t been available in the US due to certification issues. The California company Tom Hall Ent is working on getting them CPSC approved, and they should be on the market in July. Getting the CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) approval is quite difficult, as the US regulations are very stringent, although Jim Bremner of Tom Hall Ent told me that Australia is even tougher? In case you want to read the technical fodder on the regulations, refer to http://www.cpsc.gov/businfo/regsumbicyclehelmets.pdf
MET is an Italian company based in Talamona, a small town in the heart of the Italian Alps, and makes around 20 helmets, covering the gamut of road, mountain, kids and urban. Tom Hall Ent will be releasing three helmets for now, due to the time consuming and expensive certification process. The Parachute model that many people are familiar, which is an All Mountain helmet with a removable chin-guard, would require a sort of double certification, since it is a hybrid of full faced and normal styles, and it would be near nigh impossible to get approved. They will be releasing the Terra, Kaos and Sine Thesis, Veleno DIM, Inferno DIM and Forte.

MTB All Mountain – Terra $100 and Kaos $139
MTB X-Country – Veleno DIM $139
Pro Race – Sine Thesis $279
Road Elite – Inferno DIM $139
Road Sport – Forte $99

The Terra, is an x-country and All Mountain oriented helmet, and is a simple and easy to use helmet, and comes in one size (54-61cm), four colors (Matt – Black, White, Red, Bronze), weighs 260 grams and costs $100.

Terra Specs:
Removable visor, Safe-T Twist 2 – occipital retention system using our unique roller with a fast and easy one hand adjustment, In-Moulding shell construction – advanced construction using fusion between the external cap and polystyrene that guarantees resistance and lightness, Removable visor – Protects the face from branches, mud, sun and rain and easily removable.

The Kaos, is an All Mountain oriented helmet, and has slightly more coverage then x-country versions, and comes in two sizes (54-57cm and 58-61cm), three colors (Matt – Green, Black, White), weighs 285-300 grams and costs $139. The Kaos has quite a few trick features, such as the Safe-T Smart adjustment system and washable Coolmax padding. I really like the fit, comfort, features and looks of this one, and I can’t wait to try it out on the trails.

Kaos Specs:
Integral In-Moulding Shell Construction – The fusion is carried out on all the external surface of the helmet, That reinforces the helmet and increases longevity, Safe-T Smart – micrometric occipital retention system, featuring both horizontal and vertical adjustment. Distributes the pressure on a broader surface to increase performance and comfort, Washable Pads in Coolmax – this high tech materiel ensures maximum perspiration absorption and faster evaporation. Removable and ventilated visor – Protects the face and channels air towards the interior of the helmet for ultimate ventilation.

The Sine Thesis, is a road race oriented helmet, and is lightweight and has excellent ventilation, and comes in two sizes (54-57cm and 58-61cm), five colors (Matt Black, Matt White, Black, White, Red, White/Black ), weighs 250-285 grams and costs $279. Like many road helmets, it can be used for either road or mountain bike usage. The Sine Thesis is loaded with features, and high tech functionality, especially in regard to comfort and ventilation, and is at the top of the heap of the MET product line.

Sine Thesis Specs:
Integral In-Moulding Shell Construction – The fusion is carried out on all the external surface of the helmet. That reinforces the helmet and increases longevity, ICE Lite – Composite Exoskeleton, integrated into the In-Moulding process, allowing structural performance beyond established standards. With deflectors allowing an “acceleration” of the ventilation.
Safe-T Smart – micrometric occipital retention system, featuring both horizontal and vertical adjustment. Distributes the pressure on a broader surface to increase performance and comfort, Adjustable Kevlar straps – Ultra light and resistant materiel that guarantees safety, comfort and breathability, Gel02 – revolutionary new generation of “morph-gel” pads replacing traditional fabric pads. Allow the head to stay cool, thanks to the natural capacity of the gel to stay cool when in contact with the head, to dispel the sweat and perfectly fit the head.

The Veleno DIM, is an x-country race oriented helmet, and comes in two sizes (54-57cm and 58-60cm), three colors (Matt – Bronze, Black, White), weighs 315-335 grams and costs $139. The Veleno DIM has the same trick features as the Kaos, such as the Safe-T Smart adjustment system and washable Coolmax padding, adds Kevlar straps for additional strength.
