DT Swiss 2012 Preview

by Brian Mullin on June 10, 2011

DT Swiss rolled out some of their new 2012 products in preparation for the Eurobike show, which take place at the end of August in Germany. I had seen a couple of the items (mostly 29er based) at Sea Otter recently, and they are coming out with some great items, that have the typical DT Swiss innovation, and many at a better price point. Enjoy!

FX 1950 Tricon
The TRICON line expands in 2012 with two new wheel sets. Responsible for rough family growing is the new FX 1950 Tricon, a freeride wheel set, that weighs under 2.000 gram. Next to its progressive design the wheel set is characterized by further TRICON specific features as the Star Ratchet System or its tubeless compatibility.

Thoughts => These look like a wicked set of wheels, lightweight, robust, wide, tubeless and ready for some heavy duty All Mountain and Freeride entertainment, and I like the color, much better then the usual red combination’s, can’t wait to check them out in person, and perhaps test them?

  • Front Wheel – 100mm/15mm TA and 110mm/20 TA
  • Rear Wheel – 135mm/10mm TB, 142mm/12mm TA (X-12) and 150mm/12mm TA
  • Hub – TRICON, Star Ratchet System, 6-bolt
  • Rim – Aluminium, 30 x 21mm , 30 hole
  • Color – black/shiny green

NEW RRC NEW RRC AERO WHEEL LINE UP
Thoughts => Ok, I am not a roadie, but these sound very intriguing and highly innovative, and I wonder how a carbon braking surface will work?

  • High performance carbon braking surface
  • Innovative spoke and hub design
  • Outstanding aerodynamics
  • Aggressive optics
  • The brandnew DT Swiss RRC line up – presented at Eurobike 2011!

XRC 950 T
New high-end tubular wheel set. Nino Schurter from Scott-Swisspower MTB Racing Team won the first XC-World Cup this year with these incredible wheels. Very stiff carbon-rims in combination with the brand new 180 Carbon Ceramic hub with ceramic bearings and Star Ratchet System guarantees maximum performance! All that at a sensational weight of about 1.200 gram.

Thoughts => I checked these out at Sea Otter, and they are unbelievably light and very trick carbon rims, expect pricing to expensive

  • Front wheel – 100mm/5mm QR
  • Rear wheel – 135mm/5mm QR
  • Hub – new carbon hub, Ceramic Bearings and Star Ratchet System, Center Lock (6-Bolt with adapter)
  • Rim – Carbon, 26 x 30mm, 28 hole
  • Color – Carbon UD

XRC 950 T 29
The 29er version of the XRC 950 T is the first choice of Florian Vogel from SCOTT-Swisspower MTB Racing Team. The XRC 950 T 29 comes with the same top features as its little brother and guarantees maximum speed and outstanding riding characteristics. And of course the weight with
about 1.200 gram is sensational.

XM 1550 Tricon 29
TRICON goes 29 with the XM 1550 Tricon 29. The light and stiff cross mountain wheel set is tubeless compatible, equipped with the two piece hub with Star Ratchet System and all further TRICON specific features. The weight is approximately 1.800 gram.

Thoughts => Saw these at Sea Otter. It’s nice to see a 29er version of a Tricon wheel, with the trick Tricon hub and tubeless ready for the bike wheels!

  • Front wheel – 100mm/9mm TB, 100mm/15mm TA, Lefty
  • Rear wheel – 135mm/10mm TB
  • Hub – TRICON, Star Ratchet System, Center Lock (6-bolt with Adapter)
  • Rim – Aluminium, 26 x 19mm , 30 hole

XMM 100 29 / XMM 120 29
Also new to the 29er family is the XMM 100 / 120 with 100mm or 120mm of convertible travel. The XMM 100 or XMM 120 is a light fork for fast cross mountain riding. The high-end version leaves nothing to be desired: twin shot damping system, remote control, tapered carbon steerer with carbon crown, all that at a weight of just under 1.520 gram.

Thoughts => Another 29er Sea Otter sighting, with the stiff Torsion-Box Magnesium arch, carbon steerer and Twin Shot damping technology

  • Crown/steerer – 1.5 Tapered / High-Modulus UD-Carbon
  • Uppers – 32mm Aluminium
  • Lowers – Torsion-Box Magnesium
  • Damping – Twin Shot Damping System featuring three ride settings: open, climbed or lockout, available with or without remote control; travel management
  • Spring – ABS air spring
  • Alternative models with 9mm or 15mm drop-out, 1 1/8 steerer or aluminum crown will also be available.

XMM 150
The XMM 150 is a very light and stiff magnesium fork with 150mm travel. For 2012 the fork will be available with the twin shot damping system for the first time. The weight of the top version is just under 1.570 gram, the specs are twin-shot damping system, remote, tapered carbon steerer with carbon crown.

Thoughts => Better pricing using Al/Mg. Stiff Torsion-Box Magnesium arch, carbon steerer and Twin Shot damping technology, and 150mm travel! Can’t wait to test this baby!

  • Crown/steerer – 1.5 Tapered / High-Modulus UD-Carbon

180 carbon ceramicThe evolution of the 190 ceramic hub. Lighter and torsionally stiffer thanks to its oversized carbon body. The ceramic bearings run extremely smooth and are super durable. All components, from the freehub body to the star ratchets and the end pieces are meticulously machined to only leave material where it is needed.

Thoughts => Sea Otter sighting: DT Swiss had done a carbon shell a number of years ago, and I am glad they are getting this out as a standalone hub, light, trick and ceramic bearings!

  • Front wheel – 100mm/5mm QR, 100mm/5mm QR Center Lock
  • Rear wheel – 130mm/5mm QR, 135mm/5mm QR Center Lock
  • Hub – UD-carbon hubshell body, Aluminium flange, Ceramic cartridge bearings, Star Ratchet freewheel system, Center Lock (incl. 6-bolt adaptor)
