POC and MIPS Collaborate on New Styles

by Brian Mullin on June 14, 2012

POC has been busy again, and they’re adding the MIPS technology to 3
of their helmets. POC has always been at the forefront of safety for
extreme sports, and combining their excellent helmets with MIPS Helmet
Technology is both purposeful and safe for the end user, and I can’t
wait to try one out!

POC Leads the Charge in Helmet Safety with MIPS Brain Protection Technology

6/13/12
– POC Sports, a Swedish company that develops and markets personal
protective gear for gravity sports athletes, has recently started
implementing MIPS Helmet Technology to their current helmet line.  MIPS
(Multi-Directional Impact Protection Systems) is the latest in helmet
technology and reinforces POC’s number one goal of providing the safest
helmets on the market.

The Multi-Directional Impact Protection System,
MIPS, was developed by a Swedish neuroscientist to improve protection
from oblique impacts to the head.   Concussions and brain injuries are
often caused by angled head impacts that create rotational violence to
the brain, causing strain on the brain tissue. MIPS utilizes either a
low friction layer on the inside of the helmet liner for inmold helmets
or a low-friction layer between the outer shell and liner for hard
shell/two piece helmets to absorb much of the energy created by both
unilateral or oblique blows to the head.

By mimicking the brain’s own
protective mechanisms, MIPS can significantly minimize brain injuries in
connection with angled impacts and rotational violence. The Royal
Institute of Technology (KTH) of Sweden has conducted tests concluding
MIPS helmets can significantly minimize brain injuries:

The three styles from POC that implement MIPS are the Cortex DH Helmet, the Trabec Race MIPS Helmet and the Receptor Backcountry Helmet.

The Cortex DH Helmet
is a lightweight advanced carbon shell wrapped over POC’s patent
pending aramid reinforced in-mold liner. The liner has a thin shell of
polycarbonate covering the multi-impact Super EPP core. The double
overlapping shell design, POC’s patented VDSAP, allows a fully
ventilated construction for maximum comfort without sacrificing
penetration resistance or impact energy management.  In the Cortex DH
helmet, nothing has been neglected to attain the highest possible level
of protection. Polygiene an anti-odor treatment is included.
Sizes: S-M, M-L & L-XL
MSRP: $500.00

The Trabec Race MIPS Helmet
is a in-mold bike helmet that combines functionality and performance
for single track and enduro riders who are in need of the highest degree
of protection. The construction is similar to how a skeleton is built
for both resistance and durability. The inner Aramid filament reinforced
EPS core is tough and resilient while the outer PC shell is constructed
with the seams located in the areas of least exposure. The helmet is
equipped with the patented MIPS system to reduce the rotational forces
to the brain in the event of an oblique impact. An aerodynamic channel
system and 16 vent slots provides great ventilation while the fit is
designed to be around the head versus on top, which promises superior
protection. Polygiene is an anti-odor treatment included.
Sizes: XS–S, M–L & XL–XXl
MSRP: $200.00

The Receptor Backcountry Helmet targets
advanced freeriders riding in exposed environments.  This helmet is a
highly developed version of the proven Receptor construction.  By
incorporating the patented MIPS® head protection system, the helmet will
absorb not only the vertical part of impacts, but also the rotational
violence, which is a serious concern in the case of an oblique impact.
This breakthrough technology allows the liner and outer shell to rotate
in relation to each other, reducing the stress on the brain and
ultimately resulting in a safer. The Receptor backcountry MIPS is the
perfect choice for North Shore, slick rocks or any freeride occation.
The Receptor Backcountry MIPS comes with detachable ear pads making it
possible to use during the winter season while skiing/snowboarding or
with the earpads detached for the warmer months when mountain biking.
It is also equipped with the Recco® avalanche rescue system. Polygiene
is an anti-odor treatment is also included.
Sizes: S, M, L & XL
MSRP: $250.00

About POC Sports
POC Sports is a Swedish company, built on a strong mission: To do
everything we can to possibly save lives and to reduce consequences of
accidents, for gravity sports athletes, by developing and renewing what
personal protection is all about. For more information about our
helmets, eyewear, body armor and apparel, visit www.pocsports.com.

About MIPS
MIPS is the global leader in helmet safety technologies with its
revolutionary and patented MIPS Brain Protection System
(Multi-directional Impact Protection System). MIPS supplies its patented
MIPS system to manufacturers of motorcycle, equestrian, ice hockey,
American football, bike and ski/snowboarding helmets all over the
world.  MIPS was founded in 2001 and has its roots in biomechanical and
neuroscience research at the Royal Institute of Technology and the
Karolinska University Hospital Institute in Sweden, two of the world’s
leading technical and medical universities. The company is based in
Stockholm, Sweden.
