Tate Labs Bar Fly 2.0 Review

by Brian Mullin on July 17, 2013

Tate Labs
the bike computer mount company, hasn’t rested on its laurels this past
year, and from feedback of their Bar Fly 1.0 and 1.1 models, they
designed the impressive new Bar Fly 2.0.
The made in the USA 2.0 mount, which is meant for the Garmin Edge bike
computers, has been lowered to be more inline with the stem, and has
dual position slots for more flexibility, and the bottom can be
integrated with the Shimano Di2 and Campagnolo EPS modules. The 2.0
comes in Classic Black, Blue, White, and Hi-Viz Yellow, weighs 22 grams,
retails for $24.99 and comes with their “Buy one you’re done” lifetime warranty and crash replacement policy.

Impressions
The simple one bolt design of the clamp makes it easy to take on and
off, so you can easily swap it between bikes. The mount is made of
Delrin plastic, so the clamp section is safe for carbon bars, and of
utmost importance, the main computer interface is friendly to the
plastic wings on the back of the Edge units. Even with the one bolt
setup and full plastic body, the mount offered a secure and stable
platform for the Edge computers.

The
two-position slot makes both the smaller format Edge 200 and 500, and
larger format Edge 510, 800 and 810 fit closer to the stem. In addition,
the new model also has a lower mounting position, so it drops it down
inline with the stem.

I have been testing the 2.0 on various
bikes, handlebars and stems, and it’s easy to install the one bolt
clamp, just undo the bolt, bend open the clamp, and pop it over the bars
and align, and torque it down. I installed my Garmin Edge 800 in the
upper slot position, and the interface gave a nice crisp click into its
lock. The Edge never popped out of position, unless I somehow hit hard
myself, otherwise it was stable as a rock, offering an excellent
viewpoint for usage.

Not much to bitch about other than it was
offset when using with stems that have a wide face plate, so that the
computer wouldn’t be perfectly centered.

Bar
Fly 2.0 mount for Garmin Edge computers, with one bolt clamp,
two-position interface, user-friendly Derlin plastic construction and
lifetime guarantee!

The Tate Labs Bar Fly 2.0 is a superb
mount for the Garmin Edge GPS computers, offering an easy to use one
bolt clamp, two-position interface for small and large-format Edge
computers, and a lowered location to be more inline with the stem. It
utilizes Derlin plastic construction, which is friendly to handlebars
and the rear Edge computer wings. The decent $24.99 price and no
question asked replacement policy, make for a great product.
