Montaro and Montara Helmet

Giro has some interesting new products coming out this fall, including the All Mountain Montaro and Montara helmets that incorporate MIPS, the Privateer R and Manta R shoes with improved co-molded nylon and rubber lugged outsole and finally a waterproof gaiter for the warm and rugged Alpineduro shoe.

Montaro and Montara Helmet

This new All Mountain helmet has incorporated the excellent MIPS (Multi-Directional Impact Protection Systems) technology for the utmost in safety. The Montaro is the men’s version while the Montara is the women’s. The helmets have 16 vents with internal channeling for improved ventilation and cooling. The helmets utilize their excellent RocLoc Air retention system and soft hydrophilic antimicrobial padding for maximum comfort, ventilation, and fit. It uses a full wrap in-mold construction and an in-mold polycarbonate shell with an EPS liner along with an integrated roll-cage reinforcement for greater strength and durability. It has a breakaway integrated camera mount, and its compact shape has extended coverage down the neck and over the ears for increased protection. The helmets were designed for goggle use and had grippy material on the rear vents to hold the strap in place. Also, the P.O.V. Plus visor lets you lift it up and place your goggles on the front of the helmet.

The Montaro and Montara helmet will be available this fall, will come in a slew of colors and sizes, and they’ll retail for $150.

Privateer R and Manta R Shoes

These new shoes follow up on their predecessors roots, but they have upgraded the old hard tread with a new co-molded nylon and rubber high traction lugged outsole for improved traction and walkability. The Privateer R is the men’s version while the Manta R is the women’s, and they’ll also have the Privateer R HV model for high volume and extra-wide feet. The shoes have a nice blend of stiffness and flexibility, along with improved foot protection and forefoot and heel abrasion resistance. For foot protection, it has a reinforced toe box with a rubber toe guard and a mid-foot scuff guard that will improve durability and safety from rocks and other trails hazards. For comfort, they utilize a supple microfiber upper, and the closure system uses a micro-ratcheting buckle along with two Velcro straps. Alpineduro Shoe

Alpineduro Shoe

I like the Alpineduro shoe, and overall these are a great pair of shoes that provide comfort, warmth, and all-weather protection during the off season riding and inclement weather conditions. The shoes are plenty stiff for pedaling performance with enough flex for hiking, and the sticky Vibram soles work great on rocks and roots. The toe and heel cap and tough microfiber upper provide excellent foot protection and abrasion resistance. I did notice that the loose cuff and downward angled rear section of the top of the shoe meant it sometimes trapped debris, such as sand and pebbles and snow. I thought to myself. “If I was going to be riding in sloppy and deep snow conditions, a gaiter might be a good idea.”

Alpineduro Gaiter

Alpineduro Gaiter

So lo and behold, they have released the Alpineduro Rain Gaiters. The waterproof four-way stretch upper has a YKK locking zipper and a heavy duty belly strap to keep it in position over your shoes. Reflective details heighten your nighttime visibility. The gaiters seem like an ideal candidate for pairing with my shoes for the upcoming offseason, and I am looking forward to trying them out in the real world conditions.

  • Waterproof four-way stretch upper

  • Reflective details for night visibility
  • Heavy duty belly strap to keep gaiter in position on shoe
