X-ALP Launch II Shoe

For the upcoming 2016 season, Pearl Izumi has some great new products for the mountain biker and commuter. The excellent new X-Alp Launch II shoe is stiff and walkable and offers great foot protection and comfort. The Divide Short has been upgraded with new features and color patterns, and the Big Air All Mountain long sleeved jersey gets some fun new colors. They have three new cold weather gloves; the highlight being the P.R.O. AmFIB Super Glove, which offers excellent warmth, dryness and dexterity with its half-lobster design.

X-Alp Launch II Shoe

I have used quite a few of the X-Alp series shoes over the years, including the old X-Alp Elite and the current X-Alp Enduro IV, and found them to be tough, comfortable and excellent during hike-a-bike forays. The new X-Alp Launch II gets some significant upgrades over its predecessor, the foremost being the Bi-directional closure system that uses the highly adjustable BOA reel to deliver optimal fit. It utilizes a carbon fiber injected composite shank to maximize pedaling and power performance while the midsole and outsole has an EVA run shoe foam for comfort. For traction purposes, it uses carbon rubber lugs for gripping on rocks, roots, and dirt. The shoe offers improved foot protection and has a burly toe box and a wraparound synthetic upper with a couple of strategic mesh openings for ventilation. It weighs around 380 grams, comes in a slew of sizes, two color schemes specific to men’s and women’s models and retails for $160.

Call it a blend of a mountain bike shoe and an aggressive trail running shoe, as it offers enough stiffness for power transfer along with excellent walkability characteristics. It’s comfortable, light and gives great foot protection from rocks and other debris. Top it all off with the superb BOA reel closure system that’s matched up with a Velcro strap at the front, and this synergy gives a customized fitting. I am looking forward to trying these out in the real world, and I am confident that the X-Alp heritage and all these new features will offer up an excellent performing shoe.

Features:

  • Bi-directional Closure: delivers a semi-custom fit by gathering equally from both sides for even foot retention, with the precision of a micro-adjustable BOA reel
  • EVA X-Alp outsole/midsole for off the bike cushioning and comfort and on the bike power transfer
  • Carbon rubber lugged outsole for superior traction and durability
  • Low-cut construction for a light, fast fit and feel
  • Carbon fiber injected composite shank for efficient power transfer
  • SPD Compatible

Big Air Jersey and Divide Short

Divide Short

The Divide short has been around for some years, and this newer design offers some great new features and color schemes. It utilizes a comfortable four-way stretch fabric that has excellent wicking and moisture management properties. For utilitarian purposes, it has a snap front with a zipper fly and two front and one back pockets. The short has a 13″ inseam and has a snag-free internal waist adjustment system for fitting. It comes in two colors, Black, and Black/Viridian Green and retails for $75.

I had to look up what Viridian is: It’s a dark shade of Spring Green and takes its name from the Latin Viridis, meaning “green”.

Features:

  • Lightweight Transfer fabric provides optimal moisture transfer with superior hand feel
  • Snap front closure with zip fly
  • Snag free internal waist adjustment
  • Two front leg and one padded center back pockets
  • 13” inseam (Size medium)
  • Sizes: XS-XXL
  • Colors – Black, Black / Viridian Green
  • MSRP $75

Big Air Jersey

The Big Air Jersey was a new item for them last year, and it’s pushing them from their cross country roots to the Enduro and All-Mountain world. The long sleeved jersey offers excellent sun protection, and the open mesh design has great ventilation. It uses a 100% Polyester Transfer fabric for increased moisture management, so you stay drier and includes a small functional sunglass wipe. The jersey is cut with a roomy and relaxed fit, making it comfortable to wear during any riding. It comes in some fun colors and retails for $55.

I am looking forward to trying this loose fit jersey out, and I appreciate the sun and abrasion protection a long sleeved design offers, plus the colors and patterns are cool.

Features:

  • Transfer fabric provides moisture management
  • V-neck collar design
  • Long length sleeve for additional coverage
  • Sun glass wipe sewn inside of jersey
  • Relaxed fit
  • 100% polyester
  • Sizes: S-XXL
  • MSRP -$55.00

P.R.O. AmFIB Super Glove

P.R.O. AmFIB Super Glove

The new AmFIB Super Glove seems like the ideal cold weather glove and combines a lobster and full finger glove, in what they state as “Half lobster finger configuration keeps fingers warm and allows greater dexterity.” In addition to those characteristics, it even allows one to flip the bird at annoying cars, hikers, and bears. Their top of the line glove utilizes a softshell material with a DWR finish for wind and water protection combined with a soft and tough Clarino synthetic leather palm. To keep the hands warm and dry, they use an Outdry lining for water protection and a 170g Primaloft Gold insulation for the utmost in warmth. To help with fit and to keep out the elements it has a draw cord closure at the wrist and back of the hand cinch strap, much a ski glove.

The AmFIB Super Glove is a warm, water resistant and tough glove, and the half-lobster design offers up improved dexterity over a mitten. When the first brunt of winter shortly comes my way I hope to be wearing these so my hands will be toasty warm and dry.
