Just In – Club Ride Phantasm Jersey, Pipeline and Cargo Away Shorts

by Brian Mullin on November 16, 2015

The long sleeved Phantasm jersey is comfy, breathable and wicks well while the multi-pocketed Cargo Away shorts are tough and comfy with an ideal bagginess and inseam length, and the Pipeline shorts are very stretchy and comfortable.

Although Club Ride has followed a different path than most cycling apparel companies and has usually stuck to their western roots, this year they’re adding more vibrant colors, staid patterns, and styling and Enduro based products. They have always used high-tech fabrics and cycling based features and designs that have an extra degree of toughness and durability. They sent a couple of new pieces of apparel to test and review, including the wild Phantasm long sleeved All Mountain jersey, the brightly colored Enduro based Pipeline and baggy Cargo Away shorts.

Phantasm Jersey

The new Phantasm is a long sleeved All Mountain jersey that is lightweight and very breathable. It has a cool camouflage pattern on the sleeves with venting that runs asymmetrically down the body for optimal cooling when out in the sun. It has a relaxed and comfortable fit and the long sleeves provide sun protection and help with abrasions from branches. It has UPF 2o sun coverage, a media port and comes in two fun colors, Cobalt, and Kermit, and retails for $54.95.

Impressions

I like this baggy and semi loose fitting Phantasm jersey, and I found it comfortable, light and easy wearing. I appreciated the sun coverage the long sleeves provided and the additional arm protection it offered from encounters with bushes and branches, plus the colors and patterns were pretty cool. It vented and dissipated moisture well, even when it got hot out. It worked fine throughout a large temperature range though it was too thin and airy when it dropped to 40 degrees. With all the washing, it’s been through and the bashing through the trees, and even a couple of good crashes, the jersey has been durable and hasn’t pilled, frayed or torn as yet. The Phantasm is an excellent long sleeved jersey that is comfy, breathable and wicks well and it will be seeing a lot of uses this season during the warmer days of the winter.

Cargo Away Shorts

The Cargo Away shorts have a fun new fade color pattern and due to the way they produce the shorts, each of them will have a unique pattern for a one of a kind garment. It has a soft inner waistband for comfort, a seamless crotch gusset to prevent saddle hot spots and it uses an abrasion-resistant fabric with a water-resistant finish that is very breathable. It features two front pockets; two sides zipped cargo pockets and one back pocket along with a media port. It uses their quick release cam adjustment system that has a positive action and locks down for securely, and each side has 1.5 inches of adjustment. The Cargo Away has a 13″ inseam and a comfort fit and comes in three colors Cobalt Surf, Puffin Surf, and Raven, and retails for $79.95.

Impressions

The Cargo Away shorts were extremely comfortable and had a perfect inseam length for riding with armor. Although the material wasn’t as stretchy as the Pipeline shorts, I found the cut and design of the shorts more than made up for things. They also have some functional and useful pockets throughout the shorts, making them handy for just about anything. Wherever you need a pocket, there seems to be one, and the zippered cargo ones on the lower outer thigh are ideal and provide security for items.  The shorts have been durable, and they did decently in a brief set of rain and snow showers I got stuck in, highlighting the well-chosen materials and finish. The side cam adjustment system made it easy to alter the waist fit and kept it locked down securely. The Cobalt Surf color and pattern scheme are wild, but I like their boldness. These are a tough and well-made pair of shorts that are comfy and have the ideal bagginess and inseam length, and one can never have enough pockets!

Pipeline Shorts

The Pipeline is an All Mountain short and features an armor friendly reinforced leg opening that uses soft fabric for comfort and has a 12″ inseam. It has a seamless crotch gusset to prevent saddle hot spots and it uses a tough abrasion-resistant fabric with a water-resistant finish. It features two front pockets; two sides vented pockets and two back pockets along with a media port. It uses their quick release cam adjustment system that has a positive action and locks down for securely, and each side has 1.5 inches of adjustment. The Pipeline has a comfort fit and comes in three colors Raven, Molten, and Kermit, the latter two are very bright, and it retails for $79.95. I am looking forward to trying the Pipeline shorts out, as the armor friendly leg opening and tough material and fun Kermit color made it a prime set of shorts for gnarly terrain.

Impressions

The Pipeline shorts are made with some very stretchy and comfortable material. The sizing and cut was a bit too form fitting for my tastes, as I like things a bit baggier and having a looser cut. I also like to wear knee armor most of the time and the inseam length was too short to make things work functionally for me. The Kermit Green color was pretty day glow, making for a bright and colorful set of shorts. The use of the very stretchy meant they expanded and undulated while you were wearing them, making for a comfortable and conformable pair of shorts as you maneuvered around on the bike. I think these will be an ideal pair of shorts for someone that enjoys a slightly former fit in their mountain bike apparel.
