BloodSTOP Hemostat

Advanced Hemostasis for surface wounds.

BloodSTOP is a biocompatible, non-irritating, hemostatic agent which resembles traditional gauze. Using a proprietary formulation, regenerated cotton cellulose is etherified and oxidized to make a water-soluble, hemostatic matrix.  Its composition provides certain advantages for natural rapid hemostasis as well as patient comfort and improved wound management when compared with traditional adhesive bandages, sprays, chemical powder, or animal-based products.

How it Works

When applied to a wound, BloodSTOP quickly absorbs blood and other body fluids, transforms into a gel to seal the wound with a protective transparent layer, actively aids in blood coagulation, and creates an environment for wound healing.

Grams Thoughts

I only had one opportunity to use the BloodSTOP gauze so far when I had an awful nose bleed. When I got the nose bleed, I was dripping blood like there was no tomorrow and it was pouring out like a burst dam, dripping all over the ground, my pack and clothes. After ripping open the packet and placing the gauze into the bleeding nostril, it worked amazingly fast for such a gusher. After a brief amount of time the bleeding slowed down and eventually stopped, and although the gauze contained lot’s of blood, it was surprisingly not overly saturated with it (no pictures). I can see this being an extremely useful item for a first aid kit and will help with bleeding wounds, especially for head and leg wounds that tend to bleed out significantly. After watching the scary Cedric Garcia video of his crash when he had some hideous femoral bleeding, having an item in the medical kit that can help out with profuse bleeding could make an injury easier to deal with and a life saver. I am going to try and test their BloodSTOP iX system next, which is a more an advanced trauma care patch.

Clean Energy Patch

Instead of getting your caffeine fix from coffee or tea, you can apply a Clean Energy Patch onto a bare location of your skin like your chest, arm, hip or shoulder. The patch is a 2.25” x 3.5” piece of kinesiology tape (KT) infused with 35mg of caffeine and other herbs including Guarana and Cacao. The caffeine and herbs enter the body transdermally from the patch, and it’s time-released over an 8-hour period. The sustained flow of caffeine prevents any crashing or jolting that a normal cup of coffee or tea imbues to the body. Although the patch contains 1/3-1/2 the normal dose of caffeine that a cup of coffee has it ends up being stronger since no digestive systems are involved, which decreases the caffeine’s effects.

Impressions

It was easy to use, just tear open the packet and place the patch on some bare skin, which in my test case was on my arm. It mostly stayed in place, even after perspiring, though the edges lifted a bit from the movement of my bike jersey and arm. The buzz of the caffeine came on extremely slow, and to me hardly seemed perceptible. I am already a hyper person, so it takes some potent power to make me feel like I have the effects happening. I felt alert when using the patch, but it didn’t seem to boost my athletic abilities during my typical rides, so I’ll stick to my normal English Breakfast tea for my caffeine boost. A three patch set retails for $9.99, a six-pack for $17.99, 12-pack for $29.99, 24-pack for $29.99, or a 48-pack for $72.00.

Although the patch provides a mellow and consistent source of energy without any jitters or crashes, I found it didn’t add enough benefits for my riding endeavors to make it worth the cost. You might find it useful for yourself since it does have some beneficial attributes, so it might be worth trying out. You can get a free sample from their web site,  for additional information refer to cleanenergypatch.com.
