SRAM Eagle 1×12 with 10-50 cassette

by Brian Mullin on March 24, 2016

“These go to twelve.”

After months of speculation and rumor, the SRAM Eagle has landed. The new 1x 12-speed drivetrain will come in XX1 and X01 variants and utilizes a dinner plate sized 10-50 tooth cassette, and it offers an optimal 500-percent gear range. The wider gear range offers lot’s of personalization since the large 50-tooth rear cog allows a rider to bump up the front chainring sizing, so they’ll be less likely to spin out at higher speeds when using a bigger toothed ring.

The XX1 is still their flagship group and is oriented towards cross-country rider while the X01 is squarely aimed at the typical hardcore All Mountain rider (insert Enduro). The groups will be available in June with pricing at $1480 for XX1 and $1193 for X01, which includes cranks, BB, chainring, cassette, chain, derailleur, and shifter. The individual prices: cranksets are XX1 $425 and X01 $390, chainrings are $99, cassettes are XX1 $420 and X01 $360, chains $60-$85, derailleurs are XX1 $289 and X01 $220 and trigger shifters are XX1 $ and X01 $162/148.

First and foremost in the new Eagle product suite is the 12-speed 10-50t cassette. They kept the same gear ratios on the first 11 cogs as their old 11-speed 10-42 cassettes (10-12-14-16-18-21-24-28-32-36-42) and then added the massive aluminum 50t cog. To make everything fit on the standard XD Driver body, they trimmed in the spacing between the cogs, and the 5o-tooth sits 2mm closer to the spokes. The cassette weighs a bit more than it’s 11-speed brethren and comes in at 355 grams.

Besides the tricked out cassette, they created a brand new chain, that’s quieter, slightly narrower, and the links have a smooth radius with no sharp edges or chamfers. Those changes should significantly reduce noise, friction and wear on chainrings and cassette cogs. The new cranksets have been reengineered to make them lighter, stiffer and stronger, and the X-SYNC 2 chainrings long positive-rake tooth shape has been designed to work with the new chain to increase chain retention, pedaling efficiency and decrease friction, noise, and wear. The new derailleurs got a larger 14-tooth lower pulley to work with the 10- to 50-tooth cassette capacity and a new Type-3 ROLLER BEARING CLUTCH offers smoother, quieter, and more consistent operation. Not much of any changes with the trigger shifters and Grip Shift other than tweaking it for the 12th gear.

Detailed Product Information

Eagle Chain

It might look normal from the outside, but the engineering inside this incredible new chain design that makes possible a gear range previously found only in 2-chainring drivetrains. And it’s also the biggest contributor to the Eagle drivetrain’s ultra-smooth, precise, durable and quiet performance. The Eagle chain’s links have a smooth radius, with no sharp edges or chamfers, which yield a significant reduction in noise, friction and wear on chainrings and cassette cogs. This design also allows for a flatter plate, which means more consistent chain riveting and greater overall strength. HARD CHROME technology extends the chain’s optimal performance life, and a Titanium Nitride coating on the Gold and Black models decreases corrosion and further reduces friction.

Eagle Cassette

Take a quick look at the new X-DOME Eagle cassette. The last dangling shred of an argument in favor of a mountain bike front derailleur is now officially dead. Designed for use on our proven, reliable XD driver body, this 12-speed, 10- to 50-tooth cassette offers an optimal 500-percent gear range at a considerably lighter weight than 2x systems. It carries with it the X-DOME architecture, which, independent tests have concluded, yields the strongest cassettes on the market. New shifting characteristics improve both, inboard and outboard shifting, as well as chain retention.

The Gold XX1 version is named XG-1299, weighs 355g  and costs $420 while the Black X01 is the XG-1295, weighs 355g and costs $360. Both cassettes have a machined Cromoly 11 cog cluster along with an aluminum 50t cog.

Eagle Crankset

True competitors are always looking for a performance advantage—a relentless pursuit of equipment that is lighter, stiffer and stronger. To create the best drivetrain possible, we started with a completely reengineered crankset design. Our all-new Eagle crankset is the lightest, stiffest and strongest on the market. The XX1 uses a special hollow internal architecture combined with our proprietary CARBON TUNED lay-up, allows us to build a lightweight and ultra-energy-efficient crankset perfectly suited for the high-wattage output and smooth style of cross-country riding and racing. The X01 Eagle is built tough, to handle aggressive lines through rock gardens and big hits wherever you find them, the is the strongest, stiffest, lightest crankset available. Teamed up with a new Eagle direct mount chainring, and as an integral part of the Eagle drivetrain, the new Eagle crankset puts more focused power into every ride.

The XX1 crank arms are Carbon composite with a hollow core, and the crank weighs 465g,  comes in Gold and Black and retails for $425. The X01 crank arms are Carbon composite with a foam core, and the crank weighs 495g, comes in Red and Black and retails for $390.

Eagle Rear Derailleur

This new derailleur not only answers the Eagle drivetrain’s need for greater capacity, but it’s also the next evolution of our proven, 1x-specific X-HORIZON design. The larger, 14-tooth X-SYNC lower pulley allows 10- to 50-tooth cassette capacity in this relatively compact design, and also adds to Eagle’s overall smooth-pedaling feel. Our new, Type-3 ROLLER BEARING CLUTCH features a smoother torque curve for a quieter, more consistent operation and feel. CAGE LOCK has been moved back and out of the way, protecting it from trail debris. And a redesigned, robust mounting system further improves the Eagle derailleur’s performance and overall durability.

The XX1 are built with forged aluminum and carbon fiber, have a carbon fiber outer cage, weigh 265g,  come in Gold and Black and retail for $289. The X01 are built with forged aluminum, weigh 276g, come in Red and Black and retail for $220.

Eagle Chainring

The radical new look and feel of our X-SYNC 2 Eagle chainring are a direct result of SRAM drivetrain engineers studying the performance and wear characteristics of thousands of X-SYNC chainrings. We subjected every size of chainring to untold environmental and mechanical tortures, abuse, and neglect, in both lab and real-world settings, to come up with a chainring that would augment the Eagle drivetrain’s performance in all conditions. The longer, positive-rake tooth shape has been designed to work perfectly with the new Eagle chain to increase chain retention and overall pedaling efficiency, while decreasing friction, noise and wear.

The direct mount chainrings come in 30t, 32t, 34t, 36t and 38t models and retail for $99.
