Sea Otter 2017 – Manitou Mastodon Fat Bike Fork and SUNringlé Duroc 30 and 35 Wheels

by Brian Mullin on April 28, 2017

Hayes has been busy lately and were showing their new Manitou Mastodon fat bike fork, which can fit 26″ x 5.15″ or 27.5″ x 4.5″ width tires. It features lots of excellent technology for improved torsional and braking stiffness and low friction movement. It has 80mm to 140mm of travel, a 150mm front axle, and beefy 34mm stanchions. The new SUNringlé Düroc 30 and 35 wheels are ideal for XC/Trail and AM/Enduro riders and feature they same excellent attributes as their Plus sized brethren.

Manitou Mastodon

Building off the success of the Mattoc, Manitou has taken the same platform and stretched it to accommodate 5-inch tires. All-Mountain technology upgraded for extreme temperatures and a large format chassis. Mastodon accommodates the widest fat tires available, comfortably accepting up to 26″ x 5.15″ or 27.5″ x 4.5″ widths. At the same time, Mastodon offers the largest range of travel for the fat tire market with 80mm to 140mm of travel. It has 34mm stanchions that provide stability, precision, and consistent rebound and compression under braking and cornering.

Drawing on their expertise in snowmobile racing, we have designed the Mastodon to perform in the coldest of climates.

  • All-weather performance born of extensive cold temperature testing (-15°C / 0°F)
  • Mastodon is 25% torsionally stiffer than Competition
  • Travel between 80mm and 140mm
  • E-MTB Certified

It comes in the upscale PRO version for $849.99 which weighs 2210 grams and the standard COMP version for $649.99 that weighs 2430 grams. They both use Magnesium Lowers, 1.5″ Tapered Alloy Steerer and 15mm x 150mm Hexlock Tooled Axle

The PRO model comes in 26″ and 27.5″ versions and 100mm (adjustable down to 80mm), 120mm (adjustable up to 140mm) and 150mm (OEM Only) travel lengths. The PRO utilizes a Forged Aluminum Hollow Crown, the Dorado Air spring, 34mm 7050 Butted Alloy legs, MC2,  Adjustable Cartridge TPC Rebound Damping and Incremental Platform Adjust Compression Damping.

The COMP comes in 26″ and 27.5″ versions and 100mm (adjustable down to 80mm), 120mm (adjustable up to 140mm) travel lengths. The COMP utilizes a Forged Aluminum Crown, 34mm 6066 Alloy legs, ISO Air Spring, Adjustable TPC Rebound Damping and Absolute+ Compression Damping.

Precision Under Braking

Mastodon is 26% stiffer fore-aft than the competition. This stiffness gives the rider improved stability, increased precision, and more consistent rebound and compression performance under braking and cornering loads.

Precision and Confidence

Mastodon is 25% torsionally stiffer than the competition, delivering superior steering precision and cornering confidence.

Stiff chassis gives the rider:
• Improved stability
• Increased precision
• Consistent rebound and compression performance under braking and cornering loads

Firm Platform – Better Control

Mastodon has more robust internal components that are more active than the competition for better traction. Mastodon‘s firm platform delivers precise damping and predictable wheel travel.

  • Firm Lock-Out
  • Consistent, Predictable Performance
  • Shim-Based Tuneability
  • Pro Level with Hi-Lo Speed Adjustment

Less Friction = Smoother Ride

Mastodon has less static breakaway and dynamic friction, coupling a smoother ride with its superior handling.

  • Low Friction Across All Temperature Ranges
  • 34.3% less dynamic friction than competition @ -6°C/ 20°F
  • 15.9% Less dynamic friction than competition @ 23°C / 74° (ambient)
  • 23.1% less static Friction than competition @ -6°C/ 20°F
  • 18.3% less static friction than competition @ 23°C / 74° (ambient)

Incremental Volume Adjust

Allows the rider to simply customize the air volume based on riding style or terrain. Incremental Volume Adjust (IVA) modifies the volume in the positive air spring. This allows the main air spring ramp-up (ending stroke) to be tuned.

Infinite Rate Tune Kit

Infinite Rate Tune (IRT) allows the rider to control mid-stroke rate independent from bottom-out. The closest thing available to the feel of a perfectly chosen coil spring without additional weight.

• Optional upgrade for Mastodon
• Allows the rider to control mid-stroke rate, independent from bottom-out
• IRT is for riders and racers who have more extensive understanding of air spring function who want to custom tune spring rate for more sensitive initial stroke AND more supportive mid-stroke
