POC Releases SPIN Helmet And Clarity Lens Technology For Mountain Biking

by Brian Mullin on August 16, 2017

POC is adding the SPIN helmet technology that counters the effects of oblique impacts, and the new Clarity lens technology which was designed to enhance contrast and definition to their bike collection for the 2018 season.

POC’s SPIN (Shearing Pad Inside) rotational impact protection system was initially utilized their ski helmets last year. For the 2018 season, they’re expanding it to some of their mountain bike helmets, including the new Coron Air, Tectal Race, and the XC oriented Octal X. Instead of using a polycarbonate slip plane like MIPS or viscoelastic materials such as the Leatt Turbine, Kali LDL, etc., the SPIN system replaces the interior padding with ones that have an integrated silicone bladder. Through the use of innovative and unique pads inside a helmet, it is possible to reduce the amount of force transmitted to a user’s head and brain in the event of an oblique impact.

The new Clarity lens technology has been developed with industry leaders, Carl Zeiss, to provide unique, highly tuned and specific base tints, which provide enhanced contrast and light. Better vision will support performance with more precise turns and faster reactions, but Clarity can also improve an athlete’s safety and ability to react to dangers. It will be released with the new Ora goggles and the Crave sunglasses.

POC Incorporates Latest Technologies Into New Helmet and Eyewear for 2018 Bike Collection

Park City, UTAH (August 16, 2017) — Since its formation ten years ago, POC has built a reputation as a global leader in design and safety advancement across the snow sports and bike industries. Today, POC announces two innovations for its 2018 bike collection. SPIN, a helmet technology created to counter the effects of oblique impacts, will be integrated into several existing helmets, as well as the Coron Air, a new enduro and DH-specific helmet for 2018. The new Clarity lens technology was designed to enhance contrast and definition, and will debut in the road, MTB and urban eyewear, including an all-new enduro and DH goggle, the Ora, for 2018.

“The POC mission to do all it can to reduce the consequences of accidents for gravity sports athletes and cyclists is at the very center of our development process,” said Jonas Sjögren, POC CEO. “SPIN and Clarity, and the new helmets and eyewear they will feature in are built on that commitment and incorporate the wealth of knowledge we have developed over the last ten years.”

The patent-pending SPIN pads, which stands for ‘Shearing Pad Inside,’ are placed in precise locations throughout the helmet and shear in any direction to minimize the effects of an oblique impact by allowing the helmet to move relative to the head. SPIN will feature in the brand new Coron Air helmet, designed specifically for the needs of enduro and DH riders. Its ventilation channels enhance air flow to keep riders cool during transfer stages while the SPIN pads, multi-impact EPP liner, and breakaway visor protect riders during the descent.

Clarity lenses were developed in collaboration with Zeiss to provide highly-tuned and specific base tints to enhance contrast and light. The technology will be available in POC’s Crave mountain bike and Do Half Blade cycling eyewear, as well as the new Ora goggle. Ora was designed to fit seamlessly with POC’s Tectal Race and Coron Air helmets. It has enhanced ventilation zones, bike specific frame and fit and multiple lens options.

POC will introduce SPIN, Clarity and the new helmets and eyewear, along with its entire 2018 bike collection at the Eurobike Show in Friedrichshafen, Germany August 30 – September 1.
