2017 Holiday Gift Guide – Helmets

by Brian Mullin on December 14, 2017

These are a few of my favorite helmets from this season to help protect your head, including the comfy Leatt DBX 3.0., the light Kali Interceptor and the innovative 6D ATB-1T EVO.

Leatt DBX 3.0

The DBX 3.0 All-Mountain bicycle helmet is designed to carry you safely across any terrain. The combination of 360º Turbine Technology and Armourgel cushioning material gives you premium protection to help you push your limits. An energy absorbing material that is flexible in its natural state, Armourgel hardens upon impact, so the faster or harder you fall, the better it works. Ten turbines made of this Armourgel are set inside the helmet. This technology helps with brain and rotation safety and reduces the head impact at concussion level by up to 30% and the rotational acceleration to the head and brain by up to 40%.

The DBX 3.0 All Mountain Helmet comes in Small (51-55cm), Medium (55-59cm) and Large (59-63cm) sizes, Green, Black, Blue, Orange and Grey and retails for $169.99.

The DBX 3.0 All-Mountain is a comfortable helmet with excellent coverage over the ears and down the neck. The 18 ventilation holes provide lot’s of air movement, even during slow speeds, so I never felt my head overheating. The interior was deeply padded adding to the comfort level, and the Fidlock magnetic closure system for the chin strap worked like a charm as did the rear adjustment fitting wheel that was easy to use on the fly. The innovative 360º Turbine Technology is an incredible trick system, and I am glad it’s there for my safety and protection whenever I happen to crash.

Kali Interceptor

The Interceptor is a Trail helmet that offers enhanced protection using the innovative Low-Density Layer (LDL) technology and Nano Fusion multi-density EPS with acrylic self-healing foam. It provides deep coverage over the neck and plenty of air flow via its 24 vents, a Boa retention dial, anti-microbial padding, an adjustable visor, and an accessory mounting system.

The Interceptor meets EN 1078 and CPSC certifications, comes in small/medium (52-58 cm) and large/x-large (58-62 cm) sizes, five colors, weighs around 360 grams and retails for $180.

The Interceptor is a lightweight and comfortable helmet with excellent coverage over the ears and down over the neck. The anti-microbial pads were soft and plush against the head and since the padding and the LDL work in synergy there was ample use of it throughout the helmet. The 24 vents did an excellent job for a Trail helmet, and they ported the air straight through helping with ventilation and cooling. The rear floating retention system with its Boa ratchet design worked well and provided a secure and stable platform for the back of your head, making sure the helmet stayed put. The accessory mount kit utilizes a rail mount that secures an o-ring, and this system allows attachment of a GoPro and half-round adapter for cameras and lights. The innovative LDL and Nano Fusion add a slew of protection technologies for the utmost in helmet safety performance for my most valuable asset, my head, and highlights to its comfort, weight and Boa retention system.

The 6D ATB-1T EVO is 3/4 coverage mountain bike helmet that uses their innovative and revolutionary Omni-Directional Suspension (ODS) technology. The helmet reduces the transfer of angular acceleration using the 3-dimensional displacement capability of the ODS system. Low-threshold energy compliance is also dramatically improved providing a more forgiving helmet over a much broader range of energy demands. The helmet has two separate EPS liners separated by 27 elastic isolation dampers, and the air gap offers exceptional airflow and ventilation. 6D developed a more efficient and lighter version for use in its bicycle helmets during the competition that was then incorporated into the ATB-1T EVO.

The ATB-1T EVO comes in XS/SM, MD/LG, and XL/XXL sizes, six color schemes and retails for $249.95.

Think of the ODS system as a helmet inside a helmet and this innovative technology provides exceptional safety and security to your head during an impact. It also means the helmet is heavier and looks a bit large upon your head, think Lord Dark Helmet in Spaceballs, which is an inside joke with all of those that love this helmet. The helmet is quite comfortable and has ample padding in the interior. For fitting purposes, the rear retention system works well, and the trimming wheel was easy to use, the chin strap with its magnetic snap closure was nicely padded and comfortable and easy to tune. The ear strap adjusters securely locked in place although the straps attachment point is way out on outer liner, so they stick strangely outwards. The bottom line is that the ATB-1T EVO is a very comfy helmet full of innovative technologies to protect your head in the utmost of safety.
