Chris King Adds Aluminum Mountain Wheels to Their Wheel Lineup

After establishing their carbon wheels as mainstays in the high-performance wheel market, Chris King is introducing the MTN30 AL, an alloy mountain wheel rivaling the performance of its carbon forebear with increased durability and a dramatically lower price point.

Built around King’s legendary hubs, the MTN30 AL wheelset continues the company’s legacy of reliability, serviceability, and responsible manufacturing while providing an unmatched ride quality reminiscent of King’s carbon wheel offerings.

The MTN30 AL boasts an optimized 30mm internal width, the modern standard for mountain wheels. It features a precision-sleeved construction and a pronounced rim bead that improves sidewall protection. The rim and decals have a subtle matte finish, letting the hub color set the tone for the bike’s aesthetics. All MTN30 AL wheels have a 32-hole spoke count and a hookless bead for compatibility with today’s tubeless tires.

“In preparing to design these wheels, we spoke with shops and riders about what they wanted in an aluminum mountain wheel, and we learned that ride quality and durability were the most important features,” says King’s Wheel Product Manager Greg Hudson. “We know how to make durable bike products, so that didn’t seem like it would be a problem. However, it took a lot of comparative ride testing in the field and impact testing in the lab to create a wheel that both meets our durability standards and delivers the premium ride quality we were after.”

“We’ve been so happy with our MTN30 carbon wheels that we tried to bring as many of those design cues to these alloy wheels as possible,” Hudson continues. “They’re highly responsive and give the rider the right amount of trail feedback. We really hit that sweet spot between muted and too harsh. The ride feels very smooth but also connected to the terrain.”

The MTN30 AL is designed for trail and aggressive all-mountain riding. As with all King products, it is designed and manufactured in the US and comes in 29”, 27.5” and “mullet” mixed set configurations.

Like many wheel manufacturers, in the past, we understood vertical compliance of a wheel to be the source of improved ride feel. But our testing of Era and a range of competitors’ carbon wheels revealed there’s more to it than that. Take the vertical transmission of force from the front wheel hitting a bump. The force goes through the tire, then the wheel, then the suspension fork, then the handlebar before reaching the rider’s hands.

Lateral compliance is your wheel’s ability to deflect away from its neutral position when hitting rocks, roots, or other trail features that could knock you off your line. It alleviates the negative feeling of pinballing down a rocky chute or through a sea of off-camber roots.

We believe that a comfortable ride feel in carbon wheels is the result of wheels flexing in the LATERAL plane, not just the vertical plane.

This chart shows lateral stiffness data collected during our testing, averaged across four different applied loads. The stiffer the wheel—or taller the bar—the less laterally compliant it is. Era turned out to be the second-most laterally compliant wheel in the test group, only surpassed by the Zipp 3Zero Moto, which takes nearly a 300g weight penalty against Era. Crankbrothers Synthesis wheels come close—it’s a great wheelset—but our testing revealed Era is lighter, more durable, and more compliant.

Era comes second in weight, strength, and lateral compliance compared to the competing wheels shown in this table. But when you consider the ranking of all three, Era comes out with the lowest number and the highest overall ranking. LAB TESTED. TRAIL PROVEN.

Utilizing the engineering expertise and advanced research equipment of our FOX Factory labs in Scotts Valley, CA, we built a new test rig to measure forces carried throughout the wheel during an impact. We tested Era against both our competitors’ carbon wheels and our own carbon Next R. However, favorable test results in a controlled lab environment don’t tell the whole story. Era wheels were subjected to over 5,300 hours of rider testing to ensure durability in the harshest riding conditions.

Hudson continued, “We all used to think that 19-21mm wide tires inflated to incredibly high pressure produced the fastest ride. We mistook the harsh ride that setup produced for speed when in reality, it caused a loss of speed through lost traction and body fatigue. These ARD44 wheels represent everything we’ve come to understand about what makes riders faster. We already had a hub we knew outperformed the competition, but getting this rim completed the picture. That the rim could also be made in a more sustainable way, and that, ultimately, is the cherry on top.”

Alongside the all-new ARD44 wheelset, Chris King unveils their new unified logo mark on all FusionFiber wheels. The GRD23, MTN30, and New ARD44 come subtly embellished with their new “KING” logo that will now be standard on all their new wheels.

The new decal design is a minimalistic interpretation of the iconic Chris King logo that compliments the unique gloss finish and construction of the King FusionFiber wheels without taking away from the wheel as a synergetic unit. What is FusionFiber 

Thermoplastic FusionFibertm is a proprietary material and process from a USA-based composites manufacturer, CSS Composites. King has partnered with this manufacturer because rims produced with FusionFiber are superior to traditional carbon fiber rims. More robust, durable, better handling, and recyclable – all without adding additional weight.

While our sockets are machined out of high-quality billet aluminum right at our shop in Colorado Springs, they function just like any of the other suspension sockets on the market. Like most, ours is machined flat to give maximum bite on soft aluminum top caps typically found on mountain bike suspension forks.
