The RokForm Fuzion case for the iPhone 6/6s features a high-impact resistant inner TPU shell with a CNC machined aircraft grade aluminum frame with a Carbon Fiber insert. Features
It utilizes a black thermoplastic polyurethane or TPU liner that surrounds the iPhone sides and back for protection and impact resistance. A CNC 6061 T-6 aluminum frame aluminum wraps around the backside of the case to provide rigidity and strength, and it has a small trapezoid cutout so that the Apple icon is displayed when viewed from the backside. The aluminum frame also has an attached Carbon Fiber inner plate that provides an aesthetic value through its rear cutouts.
Impressions
Installing the iPhone into the TPU liner was simple, and it quickly popped into place, and the plastic sides were malleable when fine tuning was required to get all the buttons and lightning plug aligned properly. The aluminum frame took a bit of pressure to snap into place, but once it was there, it was snug and secure. The TPU coverings over the volume and on/off buttons were thick, but a distinct push on them was all that was required for operation. Once the phone was in the case it had a heft to itself, and it felt good in the hands, and the high-tech look when viewed from the backside was unique and offered some nice aesthetics with the brushed aluminum frame, Carbon fiber cutouts, and the phone’s Apple logo.
The aluminum frame provided lots of torsional rigidity which offered some security from any bending issues with the flimsy iPhone body. I did some accidental drops of the phone from a short distance, and it did seem to offer decent shock absorption and protection from the TPU liner, though I can’t offer any accurate validations when dropping from large distances or at oblique angles. The TPU liner and aluminum frame made the case somewhat thick, so it made it tougher to slip into a pant pocket, a pack or jacket. Although I didn’t to it very often, removing the aluminum frame from the case when it was wrapped around the phone was challenging and tricky, though it did get somewhat easier with practice. I occasional had to resort to a plastic pry device or screwdriver to leverage out the frame.
The case is rather bulky, but I wouldn’t call it outrageously large by any means, it’s just a bit thicker and heftier than most cases. Once everything was installed, it provided smooth lines without any protruding or sharp edges, and it’s been durable during my long term use. It does have quite a few cutouts so that it might accumulate dust and dirt over time, but I found it very minimal.
Bottom Line
I like the Rokform Fuzion case for my iPhone as it’s sleek and has beautiful aesthetics, in particular on the backside, with the Apple logo and Carbon Fiber cutouts and the brushed aluminum look. The inner TPU shell offers impact resistance and shock absorption while the aluminum frame provides rigidity to prevent any bending issues. Access to all the buttons was adequate and took a slight push for operation and the TPU interface provided an excellent tactile feel. The case is somewhat bulky and just a tad thick, but I didn’t find that an issue, and greatly enjoyed the benefit of the additional protection of the TPU liner and the aluminum frame. Installation of the phone was simple, but removing the aluminum frame was quite difficult, though it would rarely be needed.
