Park & Diamond: Foldable Bike Helmet

Park & Diamond 3

The Park & Diamond Helmet is a collapsible and foldable bike helmet that combines the look of a baseball cap with energy dispersing technology to make it safe as a traditional helmet. They raised over $3.1 million on their Indiegogo campaign from approximately 29,00 backers. Though I can’t vouch as yet for its safety, the helmet sounds very intriguing though they state it will meet the US and European cycling safety standards. Anything that will get more people to wear a helmet while out riding, especially while commuting, is always an affirmation. It uses a multilayer design with a 3D mesh fabric, EVA foam, a polycarbonate shell, and a composite layer, all of which are optimized for impact absorption.

Following popular demand, Park & Diamond is extending its presale campaign for its ultra-portable helmet that combines the looks of a baseball cap with energy dispersing technology to produce a fashionable solution that collapses down to the size of a water bottle. With more than $1 million raised in less than a month, it has become the most funded bike helmet ever on Indiegogo and will now continue its campaign until November 27, with new features and options for backers.

Unlike traditional rigid foam helmets that bounce and crack on impact, the Park & Diamond design immediately absorbs and dissipates energy, directing it away from the rider’s head.

For the extension, the company is adding new color and purchase options for the range. The helmet’s customizable outer skin now comes in tan and maroon in addition to the previous colors of black, blue, and gray. Backers can also now purchase a second skin for $15 in the following colors: Arctic White, Green, Yellow, Beige, Teal/Aquamarine, and Salmon, and soon backers will also have the option to customize the color of their chin strap. These additions provide riders with new options to personalize their Park & Diamond helmet to reflect their tastes and make it a helmet they want to wear.

Every year, more than 85,000 people in the U.S. suffer a serious head injury because of cycling accidents, and 97 percent of cyclists killed in accidents were not wearing a helmet. Given bike and scooter safety is such a big issue, and this compelling backstory has led to a potentially lifesaving product, I’m hoping you will help us get the word out. Do you think this could be of interest?

Press Release

NEW YORK – September 25, 2018 – 97 percent of cyclists who died in an accident weren’t wearing a helmet. The sad truth is most cyclists ride without a helmet because traditional bike helmets aren’t comfortable, are ugly, and are inconvenient to carry. Announced today, The Park & Diamond Bike Helmet solves all these issues and is available for pre-order on Indiegogo for the early bird price of $84. The Park & Diamond helmet feels and looks like a fashionable baseball cap, form-fits to the cyclist’s head for greater comfort and safety, and collapses down to the size of a large bike water bottle, making it easy to store in a backpack, messenger bag or large handbag.

“My sister was the victim of a hit-and-run accident while cycling through the intersection of Park & Diamond near Temple University. She wasn’t wearing her helmet,” said David Hall, Park & Diamond co-founder. “Rachel, who is healthy now, spent four months in a coma, and we named our company after that intersection. My co-founder Jordan and I have used our engineering backgrounds to design a bike helmet that everyone will want to wear. The Park & Diamond Helmet provides the highest level of protection and comfort – plus, it’s portable enough to be carried in your backpack or handbag.”

Following investments from Otten Associates Family Fund; URBAN-X, the MINI-backed accelerator for startups reimagining city life; and software support from Ansys, military-grade state-of-the-art design simulation software, the first Park & Diamond helmet is the result of nearly three years of intense research and development.

The Park & Diamond Difference: Comfortable, Attractive, Portable and Safe

The Park & Diamond helmet features an outer skin that looks like a baseball cap, making it a fashionable choice for cyclists. The skin will come in multiple colors, allowing customers to personalize their Park & Diamond Helmet to reflect their tastes. The outer and inner skins can also be removed, hand-washed, and swapped out for different skin.
Between the inner and outer skins is Park & Diamond’s proprietary shell, which collapses to a large water bottle size. Unlike other collapsible helmets, Park & Diamond’s shell features a unique geometric design that provides greater energy absorption and dissipation while allowing it to collapse down with no wasted space.

As you’ll see here, unlike traditional rigid foam helmets that bounce and crack on impact, Park & Diamond’s helmet shell does not bounce when it hits the surface. This is because it is designed to absorb and dissipate energy immediately. With Park & Diamond’s helmet, energy from an impact is dissipated and directed away from the rider’s head. This will allow the helmet to surpass all current U.S. CPSC certification standards.

A Preventable, Safety Epidemic

Bicycle helmet design has been stagnant since the 1990s, with most change focused on improving professional cyclists’ performance but not on safety, style, or convenience for the masses of
recreational, commuter, and enthusiast riders.

Each year, more than 85,000 people in the U.S. suffer a serious head injury because of cycling accidents. When properly wearing a helmet, the likelihood of a head injury is reduced by 87 percent. Through research, Park & Diamond learned three overwhelming reasons why people don’t wear helmets: helmets are uncomfortable, unattractive, and inconvenient to carry. These findings led to the creation of the Park & Diamond Helmet, which is the first to solve all three common consumer complaints while also providing improved protection.

“You wouldn’t wear a seatbelt if it took up your entire backpack and you had to carry it everywhere. The same is true with cycling helmets,” said Jordan Klein, co-founder of Park & Diamond. “This becomes extremely important when looking at the bike and kick scooter-share programs where 92 percent of riders are not wearing helmets.”
