Their new Thru-Link In-Line Microfilter is an inline system that works with hydration reservoirs to provide clean and safe drinking water while out on the trail doing outdoor activities. You can filter water in a quick and efficient manner with this system as it provides a minimalistic, lightweight microfilter that connects to any reservoir. To me, it seems as though it would be the perfect water filter system for bikepackers, backpackers, and hikers since most of that group tends to bring along reservoirs of some sort in their packs.

SEATTLE, Wash. (May 28, 2019) — Seattle-based Mountain Safety Research (MSR), the high-performance outdoor equipment brand, has announced its newest development in safe water, the Thru-Link In-Line Microfilter. For users that carry a hydration reservoir system, the Thru-Link is the ideal light and simple-to-use filter that quickly connects into any reservoir for filtering on the go.

“With the MSR Thru-Link Microfilter, there’s no need for hikers and backpackers to stop and filter their water — they just fill up their reservoir and go,” says Sarah Courtney, Water Category Manager at MSR. “They have clean water instantly because the Thru-Link filters as they drink.”

The Thru-Link Filter is simple, lightweight, and eliminates the need for excessive gear in the backcountry. It features no moving parts and is compact, making it easy to pack for any length of adventure, from a single day hike to a week-long backpacking trip. In addition to providing in-line filtration as a drink-through filter on the trail, the Thru-Link can be used as a gravity filtration system by your hydration reservoir at camp.

Simplicity Meets Water Safety and Durability

The Thru-Link meets NSF Protocol P231 for the removal of bacteria and protozoa. Its two-stage filtration chamber includes fast-flow hollow fiber for the removal of pathogens, particulates, and microplastics, and activated carbon that reduces chemicals, tastes, and odors. Like all MSR filters, the Thru-Link is tested by MSR’s on-site, world-class water research laboratory at the company’s Seattle factory headquarters.

Ultrasonically welded seams and robust housing contribute to the durability of the filter. Originally developed as an on-the-move water filtration solution for the U.S. military in the early 2000s, the Thru-Link has been in use by servicemembers for more than a decade. Recognized for its durability, speed, and effectiveness, more than 360,000 Thru-Link Filters have been used by the military since 2006. The filter becomes available to outdoor recreationalists starting in February 2020.

The Thru-Link Filter will also be available in MSR’s new Emergency Home Water Filtration System. MSR has taken the trusted Thru-Link technology and adapted it for use as a home emergency water treatment option by pairing it with quick-connect fittings and adapters that allow for easy integration with home water systems. Emergency authorities recommend 1 gallon of water per person per day for 72 hours (up to two weeks). MSR’s Thru-Link filter solves the problem of storing large amounts of water or competing for clean water at the store during a crisis.

The Emergency Home Water Filtration System is available in a hermetically sealed package to protect against the elements for long-term, reliable storage. The two-stage filtration system removes pathogens, particulate, and microplastics. The Thru-Link Filter fits all standard threaded home outdoor spigots and most utility sinks.
