This week WTB announced that the Vigilante 2.8 tire is now available in a 29″ diameter. This may seem like nothing more than an additional size option to an already existing tire offering, but it represents more than that. It’s an addition to the 29+ market, which currently has few options in terms of aggressive tread patterns. The available options are even more minimal if you’re looking for a 29+ tire with a durable and supportive casing. The new Vigilante 2.8 29″ fills this void.
Thoughts => I love the WTB Vigilante tires, and they offer excellent traction and braking with good tread wear. The 2.8″ width is Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy, and the new 29″ size inclusion will greatly aid bikepackers, but other Plus tire aficionados, that want a big aggressive tire.
Need convincing that plus-size tires greatly benefit from TCS Tough dual-ply casings?
Per WTB Tire guru Clayton Wangbichler, “Bikepackers were looking for something with a bit more heft to provide added durability and reliability for exploration in truly remote regions. Aggressive riders (‘senders’ in proper WTB nomenclature) wanted to run lower pressures without the worry of rolling a tire under heavy cornering or, you guessed it, excessive sendage. TCS Tough casings have allowed us to run the low pressures that made plus-size tires appealing in the first place. They’ve made the platform noticeably less squirmy and have removed any worry of rolling onto the sidewall in tight corners. They’ve already provided us the peace of mind we needed on extended bikepacking trips as well.”
The Vigilante 2.8 29″ tire is available in three different levels including Tough/High Grip, Tough/Fast Rolling, and Light/High Grip with Slash Guard sidewall protection. Both TCS Tough levels share an MSRP of $83.95, while the TCS Light with Slash Guard level carries an MSRP of $72.95. Excluding the TCS Tough/High Grip level, Vigilante 2.8 29″ tires are currently available in North America. TCS Tough/High Grip will be in stock next month, at the beginning of July.
