WingLock and TwinLock Valves

Therm-a-Rest’s classic valves are renowned for their performance, ruggedness, and intuitive operation. In 2017, Therm-a-Rest set out to engineer a new valve that retained the same characteristics but provided campers with speedier inflation and deflation. After designing hundreds of prototypes, field testing for more than 500 nights in the backcountry, and countless tests in the lab, they are introducing the WingLock and TwinLock valves to the market.

The WingLock’s larger, one-way valve allows for three times faster inflation, while the deflation ‘wings’ fully opens the valve for twice as fast deflation. The TwinLock Valve, used on Therm-a-Rest’s larger pads, utilizes two one-way valves: a one-way inflation valve and a one-way deflation valve, which deflates five times faster than the classic valve. All pads in the Therm-a-Rest line will be updated with one of the two new valves by spring 2020.

What is R-Value?

R-value is a measure of a material or structure’s thermal resistance to heat loss. The higher the R-value, the more thermally resistant the material or structure is. This number gives the most indicative rating for customers to choose a sleeping pad, which is why we’ve been using this measurement for decades. Similar to EN/ISO ratings for sleeping bags, the ASTM R-value standard will ensure an “apples-to-apples” comparison of R-value for the sleeping pad market. The standard requires a specific machine and testing criteria to calculate an approved R-value rating. Thermarest was one of the first companies to invest in the new testing machine since they understand how important the consistency of ratings is for campers.

To help backpackers and campers find the right pad for them, they designed a seasonality chart to suggest ratings for different conditions. They built this seasonality chart as a guide, but variables like humidity, type of shelter, ground conditions, and personal preference might prompt you to use a higher or lower R-value than our chart suggests.

NeoAir Topo Luxe and Topo Sleeping Pads

Elevating your comfort at camp, the 4-inch thick NeoAir Topo Luxe is the thickest NeoAir pad ever made. Triangular Core Matrix technology, two stacked layers of triangular baffles, create a stable sleep surface while minimizing heat loss. The Topo Luxe packs down to fit in your backpack and features the new TwinLock Valve to make inflation and deflation a breeze. The Topo is a cush 3-inches thick and is built using Therm-a-Rest’s Wavecore construction, a single layer of horizontal wave baffles that slow heat loss without adding bulk. The Topo Luxe has an R-value of 3.7 and weights 1lb 7oz. The more approachable-priced Topo has an R-value of 2.3 and weights 1lb 6oz (size regular). MSRP: Topo Luxe, $139.95; Topo, $99.95.
