The Ripmo AF is Ibis Cycles first foray in 18 years with an alloy frameset. Even though Carbon bikes frames can be light, they’re pricier than their steel and aluminum counterparts due to manufacturing and raw material costs. With the Ripmo AF, Ibis is bringing that incredible performance of the carbon-based Ripmo to an affordable price point by utilizing aluminum as a frameset. You can now get a complete bike for the same price as a carbon Ripmo. 

The 29er Ripmo AF features 147mm of rear travel utilizing the excellent dw-link suspension system and 160mm up front that combines for a big-wheeled monster that will be at home on almost any terrain. The geometry offers a 76° seat tube angle and a slack 64.9° head angle, 435mm chainstays, a shorter 44mm fork offset and has accommodations for 2.6″ tires and 175mm dropper posts. The Ripmo AF is 1x specific and has port styled internal cable routing, IGUS bushings in the lower link, and bearings in the upper link. It features a Boost 148 rear axle, a threaded 73mm BSA bottom bracket, a tapered headtube, and the ability to hold a large water bottle along and a piggyback shock. 

Highlights to the available option of a DVO JADE X coil shock! Unfortunately, the Carbon Ripmo is not coil compatible. Air shocks only! 

It will come in S-XL sizes, with a frame weight of 8.25lbs for a medium with a DVO topaz shock, and comes in Metal and Red Savina color schemes. It will be available as a frameset with a DVO topaz shock ($1,799), and an SRAM NX ($2,999), Shimano SLX ($3,999), and SRAM GX ($4,299) kits. Add $100 to upgrade to the DVO Jade X, Coil Shock.

Street Sends on the new Ibis Ripmo AF

What kind of launch would this be without an edit? We handed the Ripmo AF off to BMX pro Christian Rigal. Instead of hitting the trails, he banged a right out of his garage and hit some of the sickest street spots San Diego has to offer.

Slack AF

With its gravity-friendly 64.9-degree head tube angle, the AF is at home pointed down the most rugged slopes, but that doesn’t steal from its climbing efficiency. It shares the same 76-degree seat tube angle and their dw-link linkage as the Carbon Ripmo, meaning you can get that Ibis feel in a slightly rowdier, noticeably less-expensive package.

A more progressive leverage ratio makes the frame both air and coil shock compatible. The AF’s suspension kinematics leave the suspension feeling supple throughout the entirety of the stroke while enhancing traction no matter how deep in the travel you get.

Long Droppers

Like the Ripley and Ripmo, they gave the AF ultra-low standover and clearance for long droppers. That allows you to pick your frame size based on reach and riding preference, rather than seat tube length. Riders on a medium frame and larger will easily clear a 150mm or longer post, while riders under 5’5 can run a 125mm dropper.

2.6 Tire Clearance

They’ve also given the AF clearance for 2.6” tires. When paired with their wide 35mm internal width rims, this combo can be run at ultra-low pressures, which provides you with elbow-drag ging cornering traction without sacrificing straight-line speed.
