Today, SRAM introduced an Eagle Expansion 10-52t cassette for their Eagle 12-speed XX1, X01, and GX levels, along with updated rear derailleur designs that are compatible with the new 2-tooth increase. The wireless Eagle AXS rear derailleurs on XX1 and X01 are already compatible with the new cassette, but unfortunately, the first-generation Eagle derailleurs won’t work with the larger 52t cog. They only added an extra 2-tooth step at the largest cog on the new cassette, so the existing 10-50 ratios first 11 cogs remain the same, so the new 520% range is 10-12-14-16-18-21-24-28-32-36-42-52.
The affordable GX Eagle gets a complete redesign, while the XX1 and Xo1 levels get the Eagle Expansion 10-52t cassette, compatible derailleurs, and some new colorways.
SRAM Eagle Expansion 10-52t Cassette
The lighter and pricier XX1 and X01 cassette use their X-DOME technology, which means 11 of the 12 cogs are machined out of a single piece of case hardened steel, and the largest being aluminum. The heavier and more affordable GX cassette uses a FULL-PINNED design, with stainless pins holding the first eleven steel cogs together, and the largest being aluminum. They’ll continue to offer the 10-50t cassette.
I have not tested the new cassette, but I would still think I’d still prefer the Shimano 33-39-45-51 steps to the SRAM 32-36-42-52?
- XX1 Eagle – $449
- X01 Eagle – $385
- GX Eagle – $215
SRAM Eagle Expansion Derailleur
The new Eagle Expansion XX1, XO1, and GX derailleurs are optimized for the larger jump to the 52-tooth cog on the new 10-52 cassette. The redesign includes a longer parallelogram, increased chain wrap, and an upper offset pulley wheel repositioning.
- XX1 Eagle – $300
- X01 Eagle – $225
- GX Eagle – $125
SRAM GX Eagle Expansion Group
The latest GX Eagle 12-speed drivetrain includes the Eagle Expansion cassette and redesigned derailleur, along with new colorways for the cranks and shifters, and a chain.
- GX Eagle Expansion Group – $545 (with alloy cranks)
There are now two GX cranksets to choose from, an alloy, and carbon fiber armed version. The Carbon GX Eagle Crankset is supposed to weigh around 555-grams, while the alloy comes in at a slightly heftier 620-gram weight. Both models utilize their DUB aluminum spindles and direct-mount chainring.
- Carbon GX Eagle crankset – $275
- GX Eagle DUB Crankset – $135
