The Kelty GYST Big G is a soft-sided collapsible 120-liter capacity camping bin with a sturdy steel wire frame to hold its shape when erected. The Kelty GYST collection (Get Your Sh*t Together) of bags includes the Lil G ($24.95), Wee G ($14.95), and Big G ($89.95). The bags and bins make it easy to organize and transport your gear and necessities in your vehicle for outdoor adventures and back home again.

Features

The Big G features a steel wire frame on the top flap and the outer sides and has plastic stiffening inserts on the bottom to help retain the shape of the bin when erected. It has a completely collapsible design for easy stowing, has side handles for convenient carrying and a middle divider that can be folded down to utilize the entire interior space. It’s constructed with durable and water-resistant Polyester materials that offer longevity and good looks. The main outer body utilizes a two-tone exterior fabric with a foam layer on the top cover, and the interior has an easy-to-clean embossed Kelty logo lining. In contrast, the bottom has a heavy-duty abrasion-resistant fabric with a protective foam layer. The 120-liter (7322 in3) capacity Big G measures 76 x 43 x 37cm (30″ x 16.75″ x 14.5″), and weighs 1.28kg (2lb 13oz).

The Big G has plenty of room to carry almost any piece of gear you need for your camping, road trips, and biking and hiking adventures. It’s large enough to store most tents, small chairs, camp stuff, packed sleeping bags, pillows, blankets, apparel, cooking gear, and almost anything you might need for a camping and outdoor outing. The front pockets add some extra storage for things like gloves, headlamps, caps, and other smaller sundry items.

You can pack the bin up with all your necessary gear, store it in the closet (or anywhere applicable), and throw it in the vehicle when you’re ready to go out for an adventure.

Or you can empty the bin, and collapse it down for more compact storage. The side wire frames fold into the middle, and the material of the side folds inward to collapse it into a flatter and more stowable package.

To erect the Big G from it’s collapsed flat setup requires only a relatively straightforward set of steps. Push the sides wire framing from the middle outwards until it meets the orange Velcros closures. Open up the Velcro and place the wire frame between each piece of the strap, and then close the Velcro around the frame to secure its attachment. Do the same for the opposite side.

You can fold up the middle divider and attach it to it’s Velcro or leave it down flat for more space. With the divider up, it keeps items from shifting around and offers a way to organize soft goods on one side and hard cooking items on the other.

Organization Is Paramount

Typically I’ve used plastic bins or duffel bags to sort and organize my gear. The Big G provides an ideal combination of attributes to organize your gear through efficient use of space, storage, and real estate in a vehicle. It’s quite nice to know where the cookware, tent, sleeping gear, headlamps, etc. were located, without having to search throughout the vehicle for a misplaced item. And when you’ve emptied all the equipment at the campsite from the bin, you can collapse it down flat, giving you back much-needed space in your vehicle, something plastic containers can’t do!

Even with the wire frame, the Big G is still soft-sided, and can’t be stacked, though you can toss lightweight item on it, like sleep pads, etc.

Bottom Line

The Kelty GYST Big G bin is a unique functional collapsible storage system that enables you to efficiently pack, unload and reload an entire campsite’s worth of stuff. The Big G itself can be broken down into a flat 4cm/1.5″ thick stowable entity or erected into a 120-liter storage bin, which is held up by a wrap-around steel wire frame. It features durable, water-resistant fabrics, easy to clean inner liner, protective padded top and bottom layers, and abrasion-resistant bathtub bottom.
