For Spring 2021, Osprey is expanding its bike lumbar pack series with smaller Seral 4 and Savu 2. The Aether/Ariel backpack series gets a redesign and expansion with a Plus model, and the Talon/Tempest series gets new styles. Those large backpacks all get an innovative new AirScape backpanel design specific to each series while the Aether/Ariel gets an all-new customized fit system.
Seral and Savu Lumbar Pack Updates
Osprey is expanding its industry-leading, bike lumbar pack series for Spring 2021 with new volumes and sustainable fabrics. Also, critical design updates include improved fit and hose management.
“The Seral and Savu Series proved their success when they launched in Spring 2019 to rave reviews for on-trail performance as the most stable lumbar packs on the market,” said Chris Horton, Sr. Product Manager of Bike for Osprey Packs. “In keeping up with this growing market and newer category momentum, we are updating the Seral and Savu lumbar packs to deliver more options for the mountain biking minimalist.”
Seral and Savu are off-the-back hydration solutions that are ideal for quick laps on local singletrack or gravel rails. Providing carry for a few key essentials and water, the Seral series is designed to hold an included lumbar reservoir. In contrast, the Savu series offers a simple water bottle carry option. Excellent stability comes in the way of a biking-specific fit with compression straps that pull the pack into the lower back and wrap around the hips. This is created by a breathable airmesh wrap hipbelt that contours over the hipbone, Osprey’s ErgoPull cross-body waist strap closure system that pulls the pack into the lumbar and side compression straps that draw the load close to your body, providing the most comfortable, secure and stable carry.
Spring 2021 updates include:
-
New sizes: Seral 4L ($75) with 1.5L lumbar reservoir and Savu 2L ($50) with bottle carry
-
Design updates: Improvement to hipbelt wrap and compression geometry for better fit and gear stabilization
-
Improved hose management on Seral: A stronger magnet offers a dramatic increase in hold power coupled with a stable attachment point closer to the front of the waist belt. Additionally, a full-length hose is provided for each user to easily cut to customize to their hip size.

Expansion and Redesign of Aether/Ariel Packs
The expansion and redesign of the brand’s best-selling Aether/Ariel series include an innovative backpanel design, an all-new, customized fit system as well as the utilization of sustainable fabrics and construction. The all-new Aether/Ariel Plus and the redesigned Aether/Ariel will be available to consumers in October 2020.“The Spring 2021 Aether/Ariel represents a significant upgrade in our custom-fit program,” said Erik Hamerschlag, Sr. Product Manager at Osprey. “Our new in-pack sizing adjustment system eliminates interchangeable componentry, which allows for a reduction in SKUs for our retail partners and an overall better experience for our customers. The new Custom Fit- on-the-FlyTM Hipbelt and Shoulder Strap are intuitive to adjust, offer a wide fit range, and promise to deliver fine-tuned fit on the trail for years to come.”
The new Airscape Suspension features an injection-molded, die-cut foam backpanel that maintains a comfortable and breathable contact surface, flexibility for dynamic movement, and improved carry performance. Horizontal plane channels prevent barreling under a full load to ensure consistent fit and optimal stability while vertical planes follow the contours of the back, avoiding collapse under heavy loads.
In addition to the new backpanel, Osprey is debuting an all-new Custom Fit-on-the-FlyTM Hipbelt, a Custom Fit-on-the-Fly Shoulder Strap, and adjustable torso length that allows for a fine-tuned fit for a variety of body shapes and sizes while allowing for easy adjustment on the trail.
In step with Osprey’s goal to become the most progressive, transparent, and sustainable hardgoods brand in the world, the packs feature high-quality bluesign®-approved body fabrics and PFC-free DWR. Additionally, the injected molding on the Airscape Suspension virtually eliminates plastic waste.

New Styles and Update to Talon/Tempest Series
Osprey is doing a full series updates to their versatile Talon/Tempest series, including new styles, a new injection-molded, ridged-foam AirScape backpanel, and more durable, sustainable fabrics. One of the most versatile technical pack series ever created, Talon/Tempest is designed for dynamic body movement, whether you’re bagging peaks or bikepacking.“Talon/Tempest is one of Osprey’s flagship products and for a good reason,” said Erik Hamerschlag, Sr. Product Manager at Osprey. “It’s a leader in the lightweight technical pack category, and for Spring 2021, we put it under a microscope to see how we could make better. Consideration was taken with each detail of each pack, including improving feature and suspension functionality, upgrading to premium sustainable fabrics, and addressing consumer requests for more volume and style offerings.
”Key to the redesign is the all-new injection-molded, die-cut foam AirScape backpanel engineered with horizontal channels to allow flex in the vertical plane while staying flat horizontally. The injection-molded framesheet eliminates backpanel rounding, even with a full reservoir, and the injection molding process itself reduces plastic waste to near zero. This backpanel paired with Osprey’s BioStretch harness and continuous wrap hipbelt work together to deliver a lightweight, ventilated, and close-to-body fit that’s ideal for dynamic body movement during demanding activities over the most technical terrain. Upgrades to the fabric include one of the first commercial uses of bluesign®-approved recycled high-tenacity nylon fabric with PFC-free DWR.
New style offerings focus on smaller volume packs with all-new Talon 36/Tempest 34 and Talon 26/Tempest 24 along with the introduction of the all-new Talon Pro/Tempest Pro. The Talon Pro/Tempest Pro offers upgraded durability and weight savings with Osprey’s NanoFly® fabric and subtle design enhancement to optimize stability, making it perfect for adventurous full-day pursuits requiring technical gear or light-and-fast missions. Additionally, Osprey is adding kids packs to the Talon/Tempest series for the first time with the all-new Talon Jr/Tempest Jr targeting the 8 to 14-year old adventurer.
The new line-up will be available to consumers in February 2021 and includes:
-
Talon Pro 30 | Tempest Pro 28 ($200) – all-new style
-

Backpanel Innovation with the All-New Airscape
The rethinking of Osprey’s signature Airscape backpanel has been a long-term innovation project coming out of the brand’s Alpha Lab, an advanced concepts team lead by Osprey Co-Founder and Director of Innovation, Mike Pfotenhauer.“The AlphaLab frees Mike from the constraints of the traditional product cycle, so he is able to focus on technical innovations, new production solutions, and sustainable initiatives,” said Erik Hamerschlag, Sr. Product Manager, Osprey Packs. “The all-new Spring 2021 AirSpeed backpanel is a result of the freedom and creative space the AlphaLab affords.”The new Airscape features an injection-molded frame sheet with die-cut foam that maintains a comfortable and breathable contact surface, flexibility for dynamic movement, and improved carry performance. The position of the Airscape channels is dependent upon the intended usage of the individual packs.
In the case of the Spring 2021 Aether/Ariel series, designed to carry heavy loads, the horizontal plane channels prevent barreling under a full load to ensure consistent fit and optimal stability while vertical planes follow the contours of the back preventing collapse under heavy loads. By contrast, the Spring 2021 Talon/Tempest series, designed for fast and light pursuits, features horizontal channels to allow flex in the vertical plane while staying flat horizontally. From a production point of view, the injection molding process reduces plastic waste to near zero. This was a critical consideration in the development process of the new backpanel moving Osprey one step closer to their goal of becoming the most progressive, transparent, and sustainable hardgoods brand in the world through chemistry, materials, and CSR. The new Airscape backpanel debuts with the Spring 2021 Aether/Ariel series available in October 2020 and the Spring 2021 Talon/Tempest series available February 2021.
