Glerups Slip-on Slipper Review

Danish footwear brand glerups makes stylish slippers, shoes, and boots made from 100% felted wool. Wool naturally wicks moisture, thermoregulates to keep your feet warm or cool, has good wear resistance, and offers excellent odor control. They make their shoes in three styles: The Shoe, The Slip-On, and The Boot. Each of those styles is available with a leather sole or a natural rubber sole. Depending on the style and sole, they come in several color combinations.

I tested the glerups Slip-on Slipper in green color with the Black rubber soles. The Leather Sole version retails for $76-$95, while the Natural Rubber Sole (Black or Honey) is $135.

Features

Glerups perfected their wool mix by blending Gotland wool from Denmark with quality crossbreed white wool from New Zealand. These farmers meet glerup’s high standards for consistent quality and humane animal welfare. After the sheep are sheared, glerups wool goes through many processes and hands to ensure the highest quality and a perfect fit.

At their Romainian factory, the wool is washed in soft water, then carded and felted. The felt is formed into socks or booties, which are steam-felted for a perfect fit before soft calfskin or rubber soles are glued and sewn on for lasting durability. The upper is made of a single layer of felt, while the footbed uses two layers. This double layer design provides additional softness, cushioning, and comfort. The heel area receives some additional stitching for reinforcement.

The outsole is made from a black colored natural rubber, and as mentioned earlier, it’s also available in a honey-colored natural rubber and calfskin leather. The natural rubber allows more rugged forays into the outdoors than the more indoor-oriented leather version. The wraparound sole has a prominent rocker around the perimeter, and the tread is fairly simple, with just enough cutouts for grip.

Impressions

You could wear these with socks if you wanted, but these are meant to be worn barefooted. Wearing them barefooted offers the full pleasures, comfort, and features of wools’ natural properties.  I’ve worn them daily for four months now, mostly around the house, and found them extremely comfortable in any temperature range.

They only come in full sizes, but I recommend you go down a size (or a half) since the slippers will stretch quite a bit as you break them in. If you get them closer to your typical sizing, they’ll end up being a bit sloppy after a few weeks. It takes anywhere from 2-4 weeks for them to stretch and for the footbed to conform to the intricacies of your foot’s shape. Once that period of time has been reached, it’s like they have become one with the foot, offering a custom-molded slipper formed by your own foot. The double wool footbed or insole offers plenty of cushioning and comfort.

The wool’s characteristics mean the slipper thermoregulates, so they feel fine when it’s warm or cold. The wools natural odor properties mean that the slippers never stink, even after long-term usage. They breathe and wick moisture exceptional well, offering comfort and dry feet no matter what temperature transpires. The wool does shed sometimes, but it’s simple to remove excess pieces or give them a sticky lint roller treatment on occasion.

The rubber soles offer plenty of grip around the house, campsite, out driving, and mild forays outdoors. I’ve worn them to the store and out eating, but they aren’t really rugged enough for much else. They are perfect for putting out the trash, turning on the sprinkler, and getting your mail. The soles have a prominent wraparound rocker, which prevents you from tripping and offers an easier gait. I would have liked the soles to be just a tad flatter since it sometimes gets fatiguing, not having that much stability, greatly due to the defined rocker along the sides.

Bottom Line

The glerups Slip-on Slipper is very flexible, extremely comfortable, and soft, and the felted wool upper, and footbed became custom-molded to my feet. The natural properties of wool provided exceptional temperature regulation, breathability, odor resistance, durability, and moisture-wicking. I liked the rubber soles since they offered more versatility for indoor and outdoor usage, though I wish they had a bit less rocker along the sides.

In this time of uncertainty, relish in Hygge, the Danish Obsession with Getting Cozy, and this slipper perfectly exemplifies that ideal.

Question please; How much will the slippers stretch?

Thanks

The glerups are intended to have more of a slipper fit than a shoe, however, you do want them to fit a bit snugger at first wear as they will begin to mold to the shape of your foot as you wear them barefoot, stretching a bit as this happens.
I ended up going down a size, and they ended up just fine.
