The world’s premiere chamois cream manufacturer spent six years testing and perfecting Ultra, a balm for the most extreme conditions by way of—distance, time, weather, humidity and more.
Chamois Butt’r announces the launch of Ultra balm, a new anti-chafe balm that’s made for the most demanding conditions and the most extreme athletic endeavors, whether they be measured by distance, time, weather, humidity or whatever a rider, runner or athlete may encounter.
Chamois Butt’r Ultra balm is a premium, natural oil and beeswax-based balm that’s made with high-quality all-natural ingredients for use on all skin areas. While Ultra balm can be used every day, it’s made to protect athletes’ skin on the most demanding rides, runs, and chafing situations (in extreme distances, the time between applications, or weather conditions like rain or high humidity). The brand’s Ultra balm stays on all day and will not sweat off as easily as water-based creams. One application will last all day, allowing riders to ride farther and without the need to reapply.
“On longer rides, especially when it’s hotter than the devil or if it rains, Ultra is a game-changer,” said Steve Mathews, Chamois Butt’r founder, and president. “We’ve had so much phenomenal positive feedback, I can’t wait to share this with fans of our original Butt’r creams. Ultra is a completely different product than Chamois Butt’r creams. I made this balm to address these unique chafing conditions when I wanted to ride farther and reapply less often. This product gives an incredible solution for those riders looking for the greatest possible skin protection.”
Mathews started working on Ultra in 2016 but was stumped for nearly three years looking for its base component, something that was both not water-based, but also non-petroleum-based. In 2019, Steve found a new all-natural ingredient that proved the key to developing the final iteration of the new Ultra product. From there he took to testing it himself, along with his endurance racing friends and bikepackers, and with the Chamois Butt’r athlete team, including high-mileage athletes like Jay Petervary, Alison Tetrick, Charon Smith, Phil Gaimon, Rebecca Rusch, Brian McCulloch, Brooke Goudy, Gordon Wadsworth, Amanda Nauman, Matt Acker, and many more. Over 50 testers provided feedback over a two-year span.
“I’ve been using Chamois Butt’r Ultra for almost two years and so glad to see it become available to the public on June 1st. Ultra is the “chamois cream” even the non-chamois cream users, like myself, didn’t know they needed it. It’s more than just a chamois cream, it’s a skin product. It moisturizes, feels good, doesn’t soak into your chamois, and it smells good! It actually just works.
I used to shy away from chamois cream or use it only when I had to. Now it’s just part of my kit. For my multi-day and hot weather rides I am and this is by FAR THE BEST I have ever used. As a long-distance rider, I have found it to really stand out for not just long days in the saddle but it holds up all day long on the hot and humid days as well as the rainy days. I first used Ultra 2 years ago for the 1,000-mile Arkansas High Country Route when it was 100+ degrees with 98% humidity. I only have one rule when sharing – no double-dipping!” – Jay Petervary, @jay_petervary
“I’ve always wished Chamois Butt’r came in a thicker, more substantial cream that has longer-lasting power here in Colorado and in Arizona where it’s super dry. Ultra is that thicker version with long-lasting effectiveness!” – Megan Hottman, @cyclist_lawyer
“I like that it is smooth and feels like it is still there over a three to four-hour ride.” – David Sheek, @dsheek
“I like this product for many reasons, but I mostly thought this was going to be a good “long ride” product; something to use on race day or other epic days. I’ve ended up using it regularly from coffee rides to long rides. I really like that Ultra stays viscous late into a ride, this was very useful for me as most of my rides are two to four hours. With Ultra, I’ve never experienced a breakdown at the end of my rides and it allowed my #happybits to heal some areas of chafing that often flare up.” – Brian McCulloch, @bmconbike
The Chamois Butt’r team notes that Ultra is a balm and differs by consistency, temperature stability, amount needed and usage instruction from its well-known creams. Due to this, Chamois Butt’r recommends using a finger to push out a dime-sized amount for your initial application, before adding as needed. Chamois Butt’r Ultra should be stored at room temperature and will solidify below 65-degrees Fahrenheit. Even as a solid, the balm warms up quickly with the heat from your skin and returns to a spreadable state very easily.
Chamois Butt’r creams and balms are made without harsh chemicals, parabens, phthalates, petrolatum, or gluten, and are never tested on animals. Chamois Butt’r Ultra balm packaging is recyclable and can be reused. All Chamois Butt’r products are made in the USA. Chamois Butt’r Ultra can be found at Chamois Butt’r dealers throughout North America, as well as on chamoisbuttr.com and via Amazon. A 5 oz tin of Chamois Butt’r Ultra retails for $29.95 USD.
