The Macro Drive 1400+ throws out a powerful 1400 lumens of output through their Tri-Focus Optics, creating an optimized beam pattern for superior visibility on the trail or road. The integrated single-unit light utilizes three LEDs for output and a 5200 mAh battery for power. A single translucent illuminated top button controls the modes and turns it on and off.
Its waterproof USB-C charging port and 2A+ fast charging capability allow for convenient quick recharges. They don’t include a USB-C cable, but that is fine since most of us already have multiple sets of the ubiquitous cable. You could charge it on the bike, but removing the light and charging it at my desk was simpler. It recharged quickly and was ready for its next round of night riding. Just flip open the charge port, which is covered by a durable rubber block, and connect the cable. When completely drained, it seemed to take around 3-4 hours to charge.
The CNC-machined aluminum construction with cooling fins ensures durability and efficient heat dissipation. I never had any issues with overheating, even on the usual 1400 lumens setting, so the heat sinks did their job. It took a beating throughout my test period and came through without a scratch or ding.
It has been rigorously tested to IPX7 Waterproofing standards and is built to withstand various weather conditions. I used it in nasty rainstorms and during winter blizzards, and it kept itself tightly sealed from the elements. I did not swim with it, so I can’t vouch for its total IPX7 rating.
The three LEDs provided plenty of light, especially at the full 1400-lumen mode, and the beam pattern provided plenty of coverage. The top mode button is also the battery-level indicator. The LED goes from green through yellow to red, then flashing red as the battery is drained.
The wide beam has a focused central spot with good peripheral coverage, so you see side objects clearly, such as bushes, trees, etc. That central focus pattern helps keep the singletrack well-illuminated, though its lack of depth prevented riding at high speeds. I found it ideal for meandering at average speeds on tight and open singletrack.
Choose seven different output modes to suit your lighting needs, from the attention-grabbing Daytime Flash Mode to the whopping 300-hour runtime Femto Mode. I used it primarily as a mountain biking light and only used the 1400-lumen OverDrive and 950-lumen Blast modes since those seemed the most functional and practical for riding on a singletrack. Using the single button for modal changes wasn’t ideal, but I never found it an issue during my rides. It ran around 2.5 to 3.5 hours on 1400-lumen mode, allowing me several short night rides. If it got a bit low in power, I would switch to the medium to low settings to prolong its life.
A versatile and replaceable strap secures it to various handlebar sizes (I only tested it on round bars.) If desired, you can unscrew the strap system and add an optional GoPro mount. The big beefy strap was grippy and secure and would only rarely rotate a couple of degrees out of position, usually when I accidentally hit the light. To attach the light, I would put it on with the strap cradle 90 degrees out of phase, pull it tight, snap it onto the cradle hook, rotate the light forward, and tilt it into the proper position.
Bottom LineĀ
The Lezyne Macro Drive 1400+ LED light offers a compact unit with high output, good run times, and a tough, durable body with excellent heat dissipation. Its decent 230-gram weight, 1400-lumen output, functional wide beam pattern, secure handlebar strap system, and seven output modes provide an ideal and affordable front bike light.
