Wolf Tooth Components Rear Axle and Caps

The new Wolf Tooth Rear Axle does more than secure wheels.

When developing the Rear Axle, the Wolf Tooth engineers knew that they wouldn’t be able to get away with any old factory replacement part, even if it was made in Minnesota to aerospace standards. The Wolf Tooth Rear Axle uses a captive steel washer under the head to reduce friction on the dropout face. This design protects your bike, and transfers more of the tightening torque to clamping load for a stiffer interface and prevents the axle from sticking or galling when you want to remove it.

The 12mm axle is made from 7075-T6 aluminum with a stainless steel washer and utilizes a 6mm hex key tool interface and retails for $39.95.

Besides a well-engineered replacement for an axle, I like the idea of the thin steel washer instead of the typical plastic one.

It comes in an array of axle widths and thread pitches, including 1.0×167 and 173, 1.5×172, 178 and 187, and lastly 1.75×174, 180, 192 and 198 which should cover the gamut of bikes on the market.

These are also a great replacement option for lost or damaged stock axles. Always apply a small amount of grease to the washer and threads when installing.

It doesn’t stop there. Check out the Axle Caps for added protection and the Trainer Caps for those dreaded days when you can’t get out to play.

Knowing the pain of damaging a prized frame, Wolf Tooth engineered end caps that would take the brunt of rock scrapes and crashes. And because to look good is to feel good they decided to offer Axle Caps in eight anodized colors for $9.95. The 6061-T6 aluminum caps thread into a dedicated recess in the Wolf Tooth Rear Axle head and are easily replaceable or swappable with an 8mm hex key.

I really like the idea of these axle caps, which stick out just enough to take the hits, bashes, and scrapes on the non-drive side of your bike, saving it from unwanted damage. I tend to hit a lot of rocks with that section of the rear end as I smash and crash through gnarly rocks gardens.

Trainer Caps allow thru-axle bikes to be used with most wind, magnetic or fluid cycling trainers.

Cold weather and short days are never far from a Minnesotan’s mind so Wolf Tooth engineers created Trainer Caps to reduce barriers to winter workouts. Non-drive side axle caps are joined by drive-side plugs that can be installed or removed without tools to make the prospect of hopping on the trainer a little more bearable. These drive-side plugs retail for $19.95 and come in a Silver color scheme.
