On July 20th around 4:30 PM Andrew “Bernie” Bernstein was riding home after a track bike workout session at the Boulder Valley Velodrome in Erie and was critically injured by a hit-and-run driver. According to Colorado State Patrol, the driver evidently sped off, leaving Bernstein unconscious in a ditch on the side of the road, and a passing motorist saw him there and called 911. He was just west of Legion Park on Arapahoe road east of Boulder proper. No witnesses to the collision have come forward as yet, and investigators found auto parts at the scene that suggest they came from a 2000 Dodge Ram van.

If anyone with potential information or tips on any vehicle that looks like it could have been involved in the incident are asked to call Colorado State Patrol at 303-289-4760. We need to find the driver that left our beloved Bernie on the side of the road to die.

Bernie was taken to a Boulder Community Health’s Foothills Hospital then airlifted to Denver Health Medical Center due to the severity of his injuries, and he remains there sedated in their ICU. According to Gloria Liu, Bernstein’s fiancee, before he was sedated, he told doctors he never saw the vehicle that hit him. Per Liu, the ER doctor described the crash as a “high-energy impact” and the injuries as “most definitely life-threatening.” Due to the intense level of trauma (severe internal injuries and multiple broken bones), he has been sedated since the crash/impact as they let him heal internally and start to begin additional surgeries.

Bernie is currently an account director at True Communications, which is a public relations, social media, and marketing agency, which is where I have worked with him in my role as a bicycle industry media editor. He was also a former Bicycling magazine editor and active member of the Boulder cycling community and an elite bike racer on the track and road. His true passion was race promotion, at one time doing the Bicycling Fall Classic events, as well as promoting local cyclocross races in Pennsylvania and New York area.
