PhD Socks

Smartwool has spent over two decades designing, testing, and refining the activity-specific innovations and technologies incorporated into each pair of Smartwool PhD® socks in order to amplify connection to the trail, slope, and road – providing pure comfort and confidence for a life lived outdoors. ‘Go Far, Feel Good’

They come in a many thicknesses (ultralight, light, medium and heavy), a bunch of heights (low cut, micro, mini, mid-crew, crew, and tall), and a ton of sports specific types (Outdoor, Run, Mountaineer, Cycle, Approach, Hunt, Snowboard, Nordic, and Ski). With all those options and combinations, there is a slew of sizes and colors (model dependent), and prices range from $15.95 to $34.95 (one specialty compression sock is $49.95).

In regards to bike specific socks:

Indestructawool technology – Smartwool’s new, patent-pending Indestructawool technology isn’t just something added to their performance socks, but a whole new way to build them. Smartwool developed a new, much more durable knitting technique that enables 30% more choss-filled approaches, gut-wrenching descents, and paradigm-shifting summits. You push yourself to new limits, so we thought we’d push our Smartwool PhD® socks to new ones too.

4 Degree Elite Fit -The iconic x-patterned 4 Degree elite fit is one of Smartwool’s key technologies. It unites all activity-specific Smartwool PhD® socks from cycle to mountaineer and beyond. Locked-in, blister-repellent, a ready-to-go platform that enables less slippage and more summits—helping you to not only go far, but to go fast, go freely, and go ferociously.

Smartwool PhD® socks feature:

  • Virtually Seamless Toe – This feature is knit to minimize blisters, hot spots, and in-shoe discomforts while you cycle, run, and hike your way into the wilderness.
  • Women’s Specific Fit – Smartwool isn’t just changing their socks’ color to pink and calling it good. Their industry-leading women’s specific fit is crafted to provide more comfort and performance for women with its narrower fit and shallower heel.
  • Activity-specific mesh zones – Smartwool’s ventilation zones were made to dump heat and help keep you on your feet longer so you can enjoy even more road/trail/climb time.
  • Dialed-in Cushioning – Whether you want an extra buffer from the trail or like to run light and fast, we designed our different cushioning levels to accommodate your needs.
  • ZQ-Certified Merino Wool – After 25 years, Merino wool is still Smartwool’s secret sauce. It helps regulate body temperature, moves moisture away from your skin at a vapor level, and resists odors. The PhD® socks use higher-quality, finer Merino wool in order to further increase durability and softness.
